Sadly, Hattie is no better. She is still lying down when she is not moving between spots. She lay next to my chair for a long time today. As you can see in this picture she is shifted onto her side which should help with the sore spot. She is also still limping.

If she has not improved by Wednesday I will switch her to metacam.

I am afraid Honey is dying from reproductive issues. :-(
I may provide more details tomorrow. For now I just hope that she stays alive tomorrow morning for me to give her more treatment such as Baytril.

Thanks, it's my first chook dying so it's sad. And more so since I am out here. My mum isn't used to handling such matters, but she was good about it.

My BIL was sad, they were really his hens not my niece's as she was rarely ever around and Ken was the one taking care of them.

I think she had a good and very long life for a production hen. It must feel strange for your BIL that she didn't die at his place, but he knows you took good care of her.

50% mortality. Agathae needs to snap out of it. She is going to kill herself being broody.
How do I stop her?

Have you tried all the usual things ? Barring her nest, making her sleep on a roost, and last resort a broody cage,
collecting eggs as often as possible so as not to leave a stash ?

Not sure also what makes you think she is going to kill herself ? Many of us have hens that go broody very often. If they eat well in between, are not submitted to overheating or parasites in their nest, they can remain in good health. It gives them a pause from laying, which is a good thing health-wise. They may seem a bit off in the transition from broody to non broody and the other way round. When Agathae isn't broody and hasn't been for a while does she look and act normal ? Have you been monitoring her weight ?

For Monday I’ve got mugs of some of the newcomers. They’ve been here for three months and a half now, time flies.

And my ex-batt Blanche. Everyday I think will be her last and she proves me wrong. She isn't awake a lot now but when she is, she still fully enjoys her chicken stuff.

Hmmmmmmm, is Blanche turning into part feline? Sleeps a lot, but when awake, quite active and causing trouble??? She is a beautiful girl - do you know how old she is?

These old ladies (your Blanche, my Tuff) are tough old birds - and it's lovely seeing Blanche enjoying her older years. That is why I am not too sad about Tuff, she had a good life, and a long one for a production hen. I think that the hen Red (the one with the maggot situation), will likely be the next to go, she has the same breathing as Tuff did, but she isn't gasping like Tuff was.

Yes my cat is the same - yet she loves playing in the water in the sink taps, go figure!

It's really hot and humid back home, I will get mum to put the fans on the chicken's Hen House tonight, of course I head out and it turns miserably hot, meanwhile it was cool and drizzly yesterday, repeat here today - good for the guys working as it's not too hot for them, but makes the sites really slippery for driving and walking.

Honey has been laying soft shell eggs for a while. Almost every morning, we will find a soft shell in the coop, not in the nesting box. It's like she will poop out a soft shell egg every night. Back then, I wasn't quite sure it was hers.

8/29 Tuesday: her bottom was really dirty. I gave her a bath. Afterwards, she pooped out yolk, egg whites, and poop simultaneously. The soft shell must have been stuck inside.

8/31 Thursday: Has her started on Amox. 250mg, twice a day given she is 2kg.

9/1 Friday: She almost seems back to normal.

9/2 Saturday: She got worse but still scratched a bit from time to time.

9/3 Sunday: She went downhill fast. She was not moving at all.

9/4 Monday: Fed her Baytril around 6:30am. My small scale hasn't arrived yet but I realized that I have a 1/8 teaspoon. She needs about 1/16 teaspoon of 10% baytril powder daily, so I just divided the 1/8 teaspoon into half.

She also has nutridrench in her water now.

I have seen on the emergency forum that people were advised to replace Amox by Baytril in the middle of Amox. I hope this is OK.

I don't know if Honey is going to survive this.

Also in news my side of things, mum found Tuff passed away this morning, we knew it was going to happen, she was old for a production breed at 5. My BIL came down and buried her in the paddock by the fence we’re she enjoyed hunting for bugs and such.

Other than that everyone is good, horses too. Mum is managing fine but tells me that horses are way easier to take care of then chickens. I did remind her that they were like 2 yr old kids.

Work is busy, lots of driving between sites; today I found an awesome farmers market which will be my new grocery shopping place, it’s close to my Air BnB.

We miss you too, but we are also all glad you have a new job hope it is a better fit for you. A farmer’s market sounds like a lovely find.
