And news, mum found a hidden nest with 15 baby chicks 😳

Just kidding, she found a nest hidden in the straw stack with 15 eggs in it 😆

Reassurance needed
I know I shouldn’t worry so much. I know that new egg layers take a while to get into their groove and that mistakes happen.
But I still need you to reassure me.
This is what Sylvie laid.
It is small - about 1.5oz - like two others she has laid. But it is pale brown (like the shell I found under the roost) unlike the dark brown she laid before.
Also it is strangely shaped and covered with bumps.
I am mostly sure it is Sylvie. It could be Piglet though hers are supposed to be blue and I think she is just checking things out still.
It is only the 3rd or 4th egg Sylvie has laid. There is some ambiguity about the shell under the roost as well as the middle two brown ones in the egg box - one is Bernie, but it is rare for Bernie to lay two days in a row.
OK. I am worried!

The bumps look like extra calcium laid down. I understand your worry because it looks so unevenly distributed, and the shape is slightly odd too. I don’t know that the extra calcium is a problem though, even if it persists. The shop “works” are not all coordinated, but we can add “yet” to that because it’s so early and may straighten out fine. If it were me I’d be somewhat concerned but wondering what one can do about it anyway except note it and watch. Short of a hormone implant to stop her producing eggs, I don’t know what else there is to do, but it’s too early to consider implants, you don’t really know what the problem is, or if there is a serious problem. I know I’m not sounding reassuring, sorry. I want to support you as we watch and wait together, if that helps! :hugs :hugs

And not enough color. Look how dark her earlier one was.
I haven’t cracked it yet. I feel like it might be thin but that may not be the case.
She has maybe laid one other weird one - which would have been her first egg - but I am not sure because I just happened to find part of a shell under their roost.
The extra calcium would affect the color, wouldn’t it?

RC, gosh, give the girl a break (and your anxiety!)

Do you remember when you hit puberty??? I don't know about about you, but most of us women take about a year to settle into a semi-regular cycle - and stress throws it off. Give her 3 weeks to a month to settle in and get her eggs up to her normal size and shape. I've had hens take up to 3 months to 'settle in' to their 'normal.

Deep, slow breaths in...gently and slow let it out. :hugs :hugs :hugs :love:hugs:hugs:hugs

Back a few years back, I saw an egg with discoloration, and a few bumps. I think it's just a mistake, but it's probably nothing bad. I'm not an expert but maybe a bit more of Calcium would work? Do you have calcium available for your chooks?
sometimes too much calcium can cause the bumps

Our other two residents came to us in April as chicks. My wife raised them until they moved outside and then they became my responsibility.

Hattie is our lavender orpington hen. She has not starting laying yet but i expect she will once the days turn longer.

Jabberwockie, Jabber for short, was supposed to be an Easter Egger hen, however, he is clearly not a hen.

He and Hattie are inseperable.
Yep but he is beautiful.
