Pony Sunday

Autumn is here, the sun is lower on the horizon these days, shadows are long, temperatures over night very crisp.

The Goldenrod is dying off, I’ll need to cut down the weeds in the paddocks soon.

The saga continues.
Babs failed to eject the egg. Bernie moved into the nest box and they discussed the egg situation.

Then Bernie took the egg for herself.

Then Babs decided that if you want something done well you have to do it yourself and she came in to more closely manage the egg situation

And she decided to adopt the egg herself while Bernie stood outside shouting instructions.

Maybe it’s because you have one long chamber, with three boxes in it? They might see the chamber, not the individual totes as the nestbox “space” to work in? They’ve really got some skills getting them over the tote edges!

In the nest area here, it’s 11” x 24”, so a somewhat similar chamber shape, and they do move them to a preferred spot when they’re laying, usually to one end or the other. They keep them all bunched together EXCEPT for the lone golf ball, which was either left behind or kicked out, until I just took it out altogether.

For Pony Sunday I have some locals I spotted on the security camera.
The ones passing through are heading up to the oak trees to forage on acorns. I have no idea what the one outside the bedroom window is looking for!

Awww, the one by the window is a teenage buck. He is probably just exploring! He had better find a bunch of acorns, though, and fatten up before winter - he is still pretty lanky!

There are a lot of acorns and apples around so hopefully he gets wise and stops hanging around my window!

But most of all I need to thank all the ladies who made this possible with their antics.

Poor Jabber. He was confident in his manliness enough, though, so he can handle it!

And, I think you missed Elphie? (Elsie?)

Today is the 12th anniversary of my cousin being diagnosed with cancer, and twelve days later she died in hospital.
Hard to forget things like this. Nobody knew she was sick. Her body just quickly shut down. :idunno

Sorry for your loss, are those her chooks and kitty?

Relief 😳

That is the only thing I can say - a huge relief.

I just couldn’t find Wee Marty anywhere, I searched high and low, all over the whole property as I was worried she had escaped when BIL dropped by to unload some cement curb stones.

Behind hay, inside bales, behind boards and buckets and the other various pieces of construction junk here. No Marty 😢

After an hour I had to get some food and pain meds, my back and hips were screaming agony at this point from unloading the cement stones, and moving rocks and then crouching down trying to find Marty.

So my mum took over the hunt while I grabbed a bite and took some meds, I was tops 7 minutes, and in that time mum had her found - I could just bawl with relief. Apparently Marty went and hid in the very top nest box were no one has ever gone as far as I have known.

I didn’t even bother checking there because I have never seen anyone in there, but mum said that she has seen one of the grey ladies in there, so she looked there. And she got pecked for her efforts by Marty.

Well, anyways I was eggstatic that she was found, I thanked mum and we both put the rest of the chooks to bed. A bit earlier than usual but I need to let the meds do their thing for a couple hrs.

I swear these chickens are gonna be the death of me! They are just as stressful as the horses, and just as much work! Who knew chickens could be so much trouble!
They do stress us out at times. It is The Way of the Chicken. :hugs :hugs
