@Gigachad poultry (or anyone who knows 😊) i’ve noticed my cockerel Pied beau has a similar colour to your roo Darcy, black with a yellow mane. Would you know what it's called (if it has a name)?
Also, Darcy has become a project for me! I'm planning on making him into a breed that will be able to survive in the Italian alpes or places like Norway!

I literally almost had a heart attack of pure joy when I saw that, I thought "how did they get a photo of Darcy!?!" And "ahh Darcy is so handsome!" Can you send a picture of him completely? He has what is called straw lacing and a dominant base gene which is black. Darcy has the straw lacing from the Sussex genes only it's a color swap. Yellow hackle feather with black lacing from the Sussex. Sorry if that's confusing! Here is Darcy for comparison:View attachment 3650331
I'm planning on calling the breed the Dacy Giant or Octavia's Fowl!
It looks quite similar to my inexperienced eye, my cockerel has less "straw" on his body but it keeps getting more pronounced as he grows older (he hatched on the 20 May) so maybe he will get some on the back also.

I unfortunately have to re-home him, I already have two roosters. I will be sorry because we have grown very attached to him.
I’m not sure where he got this gene from. I got hatching eggs from a neighbour because I thought his roo was beautiful and well mannered : he was silver and much smaller. His hens are just layers, no special breed ; he said his rooster was a pure breed but couldn't remember which. And he also said his sister's much bigger rooster across the road sometimes eloped with his hens as well 😂. It looks like Pied Beau, my cockerel, will grow quite big, maybe not as much as Darcy though.

Good luck with your project. How do you plan breeding for cold resistance? I don't know if it wouldn't make more sense to breed for resistance to heat, seen how things are going 😊.

He is quite handsome. 🥰 🥰 🥰 🥰

Too bad you have to rehome him, but it is important to know the limits of your flock and set-up. You don't want unrest, or worse, a fight to the death. Again, he is quite the looker - and if you are attached to him, probably he is a sweetie, too. He will make someone a fine rooster for their flock, I am sure.

Sad you need to rehome him! I'm in Italy and although we have pretty cold winters here! I wish I could take him! I myself have lots of roosters! I'm about to get rid of my rooster Herry (Darcy's dad), however I just don't have anymore coops😭 I'm building one that will hopefully have a divider in the middle so I can have two small coops or one large coop! With cold resistance I'm mainly looking for big birds with lots of fluffy down and stronger outer feathers that are resistant to snow and rain. They will have really think skin on their legs so snow won't stop them as easily! In bigger flicks they will hopefully be able to stay together like a big warm ball of fluff! Having black feathers means they are also better at absorbing the suns heat. I recently just did a hatch and I got a chick that got the same genes as Dacy! That full lacing on Darcy only fully came in after he hit 1 year so I think Pied Beau will get something similar to Darcy!

Sorry. I spaced on you trearing with Baytril.
I didn’t think of Baytril as the go-to antibiotic for mycoplasma, but I looked it up and it should be active.
As for treating the others I would not. If it is mycoplasma it comes and goes and doesn’t always need treatment, and you don’t have a confirmed diagnosis.
Treating Anna makes sense because she is so sick. But I personally wouldn’t treat blind in a chicken that is otherwise well.
I am upset the vet didn’t call you back.
I do have Amoxy-Tyl powder. I went to the Baytril because that is what I had used on Peanut and I read of others on BYC using it. I was too stressed and that isn’t the best state of mind to be in. In reading more closely now I see the amoxicillin part of Amoxy-Tyl is not recommended, but the Tylosin would be. Baytril as a fluoroquinolone, maybe too big a hammer for this? But it will work, said to be a second-line choice for mycoplasma.

I would have not waited more than a couple days with no improvement, you can treat with a sulfa antibiotic and have a poo sample sent to a lab for testing.

Baytril is not effective for coccidiosis but it’s the right choice if she does have mycoplasma I am so glad you put her on the antibiotics 💕💕 there are monthly treatments you can give positive birds to control any further outbreaks.

You can ask your Vet about using Sulfadimethoxine, if indeed it is coccidiosis. Or Terramicine

And I came across this study showing have removal of ascarid through use of ivermectin increased risk of coccidia infection!

https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsbl.2013.0205#:~:text=Nematode and coccidia infection, but,and not within-host replication.

I will be keeping an eye on my chooks now 😟
Yes the Baytril was not for coccidiosis, the Spuds were all on Corid-treated water, and Friday was their last day. I started Anna on the Baytril on Saturday. For the lice your gang has, I did read ivermectin is not very effective. Didn’t know that it could have an effect of a sudden vulnerability to coccidiosis.

I wonder if the Vet just doesn’t know and figures it’s just a chicken 😢 or she could have just been extremely busy with emergencies.

I came across an article stating Baytril was highly effective against mycoplasma in poultry.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18679898/

Who knew chickens could be so stressful at times and other times so much fun 😟
Yes. I found the same article and a couple of others and felt relieved!
I get it on the vet being busy, but still there is probably a receptionist who could have called. Not that would have helped, but I don’t see how you can leave a distressed customer and their pet totally unsupported.
I don’t fault the vet terribly yet, but I’m not happy about nobody getting back to me that day about the eyes bleeding, that was very stressful to me. It could be they were very busy. I’m going to speculate that they were booked up for Friday and had a lot of calls to answer, and that also they have a philosophy of not aggressive treatment and didn’t want to go from one treatment right to another. If anyone did get the message, I’m guessing that the eyes bleeding, which was very stressful to see, is not something indicating blindness is imminent. But a good part of the job there is public relations, and they fell down on that!

I think you did right. I have also not heard of Coccidiosis not responding at all to Corid after several days. And I think at the stage Anna is at she needs help quickly.

I have suspected Mycoplasma in my flock and read a bit about it at the time. I had one hen with bubbles in her eyes and four chickens with very swollen faces, and sneezes. I didn't treat any with antibiotics because their behaviour were otherwise completely normal. Just rinsed the eye and checked that they had no difficulty breathing. Those symptoms disappeared by themselves, but now I do have most of my birds sneezing a few times a day.

I suppose you know that the antibiotics treat the symptoms but do not eliminate the bacteria, that birds can be asymptomatic carriers, or develop symptoms that range from light to deadly, and that stress tend to make them develop symptoms.

I would personally not treat Ida with antibiotics just for sneezes, and keep the Baytril for when she really needs it. Enrofloxacin seems to be a very effective and wide range antibiotic. My view is that those must be used sparingly to preserve their efficiency. It's a personal choice. I think you can wait one day or two to see the evolution.
Sorry for the yuck! A few Monday mugs.

Thank you. Yes I agree with you and @RoyalChick to not treat Ida at this time since she is doing otherwise very well. Tedi has no visible symptoms. Anna sneezed again this morning, but today I can see her iris and pupil separately, the iris has color too and outside the iris looks very light pinkish yellow now, not nearly so deep pink and even red like it was. I stopped the Terramycin as her eye looks so much better and what was bleeding is healed. Also it will improve her vision to not have oil in there.

They are spending the mornings inside the house in their corner. She has been resting in a very dark corner on a towel on top of the brooder tote. Today she wanted to join the others where they wandered but would have to jump over to Chickatraz from the brooder, and she did not feel up to doing it and was peeping, missing being close to them. So I helped her over. Then I was going to hold the feeder and water cups for her before leaving to bike ride….. But then! She found the old chick feeder which is over there on the platform, and pecked down low for it, ate some, and when I tapped the water cup to show her where it was hanging, she walked over and drank from that at the right height, all by herself! Then a few minutes later she did it all again! Yay! She needs to catch up, or at least get on some track if she’s never going to be as big now. So glad if she can continue to eat and drink on her own! I’ll get some pictures today.

Are you in France? I told my mom you were rehoming him and she said "sad, we would totally take him!" That caught me off guard lol

She was pretty high up!
Yup. Piglet, Sylvie and Tassels regularly fly to get somewhere fast and they seem to operate mostly at around 6-8 feet.
They can fly much higher to get up into something, but just to get from A-B that is their typical cruising altitude!

I'm in absolute amazement right now! Darcy has the same white "stomach" and chest!!!
