Most are out enjoying the warmth and sunshine.....except for those with early pins...Nellie.....Maizie is almost as rumpled as Nellie is....Twirp looks pristine with perfect feathers, but has already gone to roost.....Belladonna headed for a nest box, not sure if laying or finally sprouting much needed feathers.

Primula's back is starting to look FIIIINE. Has a ways to go on her lower parts.

Chia straightening everything...based upon the red patch in the middle (her head), she's pinking fast, with a neat, almost dainty rose comb.

Shan is a beauty 🤗🤗🤗💖

Just came across an Ad on Kijiji for 5 Brahma hens, 2 dark and 3 buff 😏

Bad Kelly!

No I am not going to get them, I have a crap load of chickens don't need any more, this year....

Rooster weirdness this afternoon-
Conjecture welcomed
Let out the flock this afternoon, there was a commotion around the corner followed by my DD carrying Story. She puts him down near me and stays there, of course I ask what happened and she says two of the older girls jumped on top of him and she “saved” him.

As she tells the tale he still hasn’t gotten up. I reach over and he doesn’t leap away so I pick him up and put him on my lap and notice a bad smell. I start petting him and realize there is dried chicken poop in his back and tail feathers and on his butt. I get out what I can and put him down he walks away and then lays back down. Now I am really really concerned.

We get everyone back into the run and he still has yet to move so I scooped him up and took him into the house for a bath. Found no fly strike or skin damage or irritation whatsoever. I didn’t see any mites or fleas. The amount of feathers this guy has is astounding but during the blow drying I was able to see his skin pretty well and feel fairly confident nothing is seriously amiss there.

I kept him inside with us till dusk and then out him up on the roost. I suspect the other birds are making him stay down on the ladder and are pooping on him at night. So gross but thats my only guess. There is sooo much roosting space so it has to be bullying.

Ideas, thoughts, suggestions welcomed. This guy was so sweet 🥹 he 100% just rolled with everything that happened.

He may have been dealing with some "injured pride" on top of the ladies making him roost lower. When a hen (or more, adults here) thumps a cockerel, I try to not interfere as they're trying to sort him out. Getting him cleaned up was definitely a good thing (in addition to checking him for injury). Next step: practice hands off again.

One of the reasons I got rid of my multi level roosts and put in the single level roosting ledge. Too much bedtime drama and such.

Can you put your roosts on one level?

I will admit I didn’t think of that, mainly because I have never seen either of the boys be aggressive with mating or otherwise tbh but it sure doesn’t mean they are perfect gentleman all the time! Maybe they were putting him in his place.
Thank you 😊

They are pretty much on one level but the ladder going up to the roosts can be used as a roost, though that was not my intent.

I have been wanting to redo them as the way we laid them out is terribly inconvenient to clean and now that I have large fowl birds Id rather like them to be a bit lower to the ground.

Maybe this is my sign to get a move on and change it up.
