Update on the Story situation and whole hearted thank yous to everyone who chimed in with advice!!

Story seems completely recovered and is walking normally. I never found any injury that was visible so I have to assume it was muscle pull or something along those lines. After a 3 nights inside and off the roosts he is right as rain.

To address the roosting issue I couldn’t move that dang ladder out by myself it’s really in there and in a rather awkward place and I do not have help right now, my husband has been working alot. So, I decided to run an experiment.

I have one long roosting bar like 4 ft long that not one chicken uses. I think because its about 1ā€ lower then the rest of the bars.
So I took a 3ā€ diameter pipe (pvc) we had laying around and stuck it above the offending unused 2x4 and drilled holes in it and attached it securely. This means that the pipe is now approximately one inch above the rest of the roosting area and its farther from the ladder. I put peanut butter and scratch in various places along the bar and waited till dark.

I didn’t expect this to work honestly but it totally did! When I went out everyone was rearranged and new spots had been claimed and no one was on the ladder at all.

So, I will keep checking on em for a few more nights before declaring victory.

Some pics just because:

No blood, and relative calm has prevailed for the last two mornings!
Here's Friday night

You can see the sweatjacket

The door opened early, set that way just in case. Nobody was anxious to leave. Also no pecking or any trouble really!

After some time Popcorn and Hazel cautiously go out to the porch and assess.

And a Spud wants to see but hangs back

But somebody ventured out once Popcorn jumped down, I think that's Hazel getting ready to go

She got pushed back in however

However, the one upset time was after their breakfast, when Popcorn went back into the coop. Sometimes they take an after-breakfast rest in there, or maybe she had noticed the sweatjacket and needed to investigate. I heard her suddenly screaming angrily, and heard knocking, scuffling sounds hitting the coop walls. I ran around and opened the back. She was attacking and fighting the poopy sweatjacket, and was really upset. It did look odd, all rumpled and twisted. I quickly grabbed it up and got it out of there. Popcorn left, but still vocalizing, and had to blow off some steam so she chased some surprised Spuds. I called her and started rustling the grass and leaves outside the run and turned over some stones for her to find worms (she got one). That helped and she calmed down.

Bernie might surprise you. You could end up with a power couple who keep everyone in line OR ELSE....
Ya like Marty and Mr P - the little holy terror gave me a good bit again, I snuck up on Mr P, grabbed him and all H E double L broke loose! He screamed like a banshee, and Marty ran over and grabbed my hand and wouldn’t let go, all the whole flogging me Ol’ Momma Hen style.

All I wanted to do was give him his final spray for his creepy crawlies!

Thank you for the chuckle - I can just visualize her pulling a Marty/Ol Crazy Momma Hen and flogging the crap out of your sweater šŸ˜†

I have had mine also go bat crap crazy over things like that, one of the horses fly masks set off a flurry of attacks by a bunch of my ladies one day, it had fallen onto the floor and was thus an extremely dangerous intruder that needed to be dispatched quickly.

A mouse sent everyone into a frenzy here today in the barn. I told buttercup go get it, but she wasn’t talking to me as I had sprayed her bottom and she didn’t like that - she gave me the evil eye and stalked off to thump one of the chicks… chickens who knew how crazy they are?!
