Possums are an introduced species here, in about 30 years they have become very numerous. Not happy they have been introduced here, not much I can do other than ensure they stay out of the barn, they are bad news for horses and chooks!
Yes even if I did not have chickens they are a big no no for horses. I have saw a horse who had EPM. Beautiful black Tennessee Walking Horse mare that at 7 years old was unsafe to ride and almost unsafe at that point to even lead. She had to be euthanized before she was 8 1/2. It was tragic really as she was a Jose Jose daughter who is a big name in the walker industry. They were not even able to use her as a broodmare.

How sad! Yes we have those issues here now, I often wonder if that was the cause of Sally’s head pressing and other neurological symptoms when she had to be euthanized back on February when I was out west working.

Chore time here, it’s very mild again, 18C overnight is practically unheard of here - it was 20C (68F) yesterday. Going up to 68F today, 72F tomorrow and rest of week like this. Next week they are calling for snow hahaha. That’s more usual for here.

Everyone is still quiet in Hen House “A”, better go wake them up 😊 very dark here in the morning now, they don’t like getting up when it’s still dark, and poor Lulu can’t see in the dark so I have to show her where the hay is outside,

I guess, but crossing the mountain range can be a hassle, especially because the big trucks cross over to Bakersfield, and there can be mass traffic.
I cross the continental divide 10+ times a week. My mountain range is bigger.....with such hazards as moose, deer, elk, antelope, bobcat, coyote, wolf, wolverine, frost heaves, black ice, wind, fog, fallen rock, fallen trees, snow...that's just the natural ones. People hazards: cyclists, anyone using the continental divide trail (crosses the road), horse back riders, atvs, idiots choosing to pass on double yellow lines, semi trucks (usually the grocery delivery trucks, anyone avoiding the interstate (usually due to it getting closed for weather). I could take the interstate instead and deal with idiots passing semis and cutting back in front of them with only 6 inches clearance between bumpers (causes accidents, especially in winter). I'll take the back road instead: much less traffic (unless the interstate is closed), lower speeds, better maintained (school bus route), lots of turn outs so I can pull over any time I want/need too, and it's more scenic.

I'll give you the traffic point. And you do have pretty peaks.

7 eggs today, would have had 8, but when I lifted Flopsy up to put in a nest box to ‘encourage’ her to lay her egg there, she plopped it out as I was carrying her, poor girl, I felt very badly for this, I am sure laying eggs is not an easy comfortable thing 😟

Todays haul - Buttercup’s egg sure looks green beside those Azur Blue eggs.

They do eat a lot of ticks though!

What is EPM?!

The researcher in me read about EPM. Nasty!
And that the possums eating ticks is only kinda true. They eat ticks that land on them but don’t go foraging for ticks. So not much use really. Quail and Guineas better against ticks.
So possums have plummeted in my list of favored wildlife. Nasty little things it seems.

Epic! I love it! Chooks are so hilarious, yesterday I was hauling up brick pavers to repair areas were rats have tunnelled under, along with this I disturbed Pill Beetles which the chooks devoured! 20 seconds and gone! The chooks were surrounding me and every time I hauled up bricks they rushed in and devoured whatever was moving - wish they caught a rat.
