At 10+ weeks, Thane is a girl. The comb would be larger and RED. That looks like a girl's comb color/size, even if it's larger than the others.


And the 5 toes is a silkie trait. Also a Houdan and Dorking (both no feathered feet), and a Sultan and a Crevocoeur (spelling?) (With feathered feet) for the 5 breeds with 5 toes.

Does having five toes, make for a better mathamachicken?

Some more pics! My younger ones are all like 11-12 weeks? I've had them 10 weeks. The new ones definitely act like older pullets, they are already taking charge of the flock.

And Thane, who the new girls have pretty much left alone. Hubby says it's because he's a boy and therefore not competition in the pecking order.

We would need a side shot of the black girl, but both could be full silkie just the satin or normal feathered variety. The white girl look just like @Ponypoor white satin girl. The 5 toes are a silkie trait but as previously mentioned traits of a couple more breeds. The black skin, beards, muffs and top knots, those are all silkie traits. Either way they are lovely girls and I hope you have many years to enjoy them.

It's an adventure. Middle kid had to work today so drove in by himself. Got messages from him when I got back from the school: dark pics and a help message. He hit a patch of ice, slid off the road, then rig (empty, thankfully) slid some more. Tree caught it. He's home and fine, tow truck is fishing it out, don't know what sort of repairs he may need. He's still learning how to drive on icy roads. Snow had lessened to almost nothing while we were heading out to get him (discovered he'd gotten a ride home, leaving his phone in his rig). It's thickening up again, so hoping it's not a hindrance for the towing.

Edit: and the tow truck just pulled in, still driveable.

So, I do hope he is okay - might be sore tomorrow. Glad the rig is drivable! Black ice can get anyone - not just the young/inexperienced...it just 'creeps up' on them more quickly as they are less likely to be on the watch-out for it/know what to look for.

So, I do hope he is okay - might be sore tomorrow. Glad the rig is drivable! Black ice can get anyone - not just the young/inexperienced...it just 'creeps up' on them more quickly as they are less likely to be on the watch-out for it/know what to look for.

Emts were called out (no cell signal, so only thing that works is 911). He told them the only impact to occur was after the rig was fully stopped. I don't think he's even going to be sore. He does need to go out to an empty, icy parking lot and do lots of spin outs and donuts so he learns how to control a slide.

Missed initial rush,

Chia was first out, then paused, looked around, took another step and retreated behind Enigma.

2nd rush

Invasion retreated, Granite and Quartz rushed the door and froze, taking some careful looks around.

And, just no. Not doing it.


Went in and opened the hatch.

Shan looked out and likely would have paused, but for the pressure behind her.

Enigma: maybe it is different out this way.

Meanwhile Havoc charged through and stopped short.

All food into the bin in the coop. Left to see about the roadside rescue

Upon returning they NEVER shelter under that bush.



Meanwhile Sherlock is demonstrating what he'll look like as a doddering old dog, many years from now.

oh, that sounds like fun. My hubby doesn't like front wheel drive because he can't do donuts so easily. ( over 50 - think he would have grown up already??? Nope, still a teenager at heart!). When he goes to work (vocational HS) on a snowy day - he gets there before they have cleared the parking lot, and he will drive backwards in the empty, snow filled lot so he can do some 'donuts'.

Maintenance guy saw him later in the day and said 'Hmm, someone was doing donuts in the parking lot - wonder who it could have been?" (he saw the tracks - he wasn't in yet, either) His response: Hmm, must have been slippery since it wasn't plowed - probably someone spun out by accident.


I draw the line when he tries to do it on the road. Never know when a car might come around the corner -I don't care if road is presently deserted. There are plenty of large parking lots he can use right after a snow storm if he just HAS to get it out of his system!
