I have learned the hard way to not hang around for roost time. It literally does raise my blood pressure. I walk away literally saying 'Let them figure it out'. They are safe and its not like I'm not gonna come out after dark to see where everyone is roosted anyway. View attachment 3685474

Yes so true - I do my final check around 8pm when I feed the horses. I make sure the chooks are all where they should be at that time.

My grandmother could really use some thoughts and prayers please. Just found out this morning that her brother passed away early this morning from a heart attack. This is a huge blow to me and mom as well. Uncle Larry has been the only one of her surviving siblings who visits grandma weekly and would call several times a week to talk to her. His visits helped not only grandma but me and mom more then he could ever have known. Just sitting at our kitchen table having a few cups of coffee with him before we woke her up to let her know he was here allowing us to vent our frustrations was healing. He alone knew what we are dealing with and in his way he was the only one who helped. We already told grandma this morning, she demands having the phone beside her in the mornings and we did not want her hearing it from someone else. So far she is taking it well but we can see she is very close to breaking down.
Oh gosh 😢😢😢😢

I am so sorry about this - I take it this was unexpected. Your Gran must be so saddened, with all her health issues she must feel terribly anxious.

And you and your mum I am sure are devastated. I am think of all of you and hoping you are managing ok.

I wish I could give all of you huge bear hugs
:hugs

Sherlock's chew toy of choice has become any decorative/twisty log in the flower beds, NOT any of the cut for firewood logs. Out of desperation, discovered he likes these...

And he promptly decided to take it and run off....only to return a few seconds later with a request to toss it for him to chase. Note: they bounce all kinds of crazy directions.

Shopping list: my contributions to family dinner next week, more sweet potatoes, biggest carrots I can find, hardest apples and pears I can find. Price: cheaper than ANY commercially made dog chews, and they take him longer to go through.

Drama… you all know I hate it.

Tonight they kiddos found out that I stapled the screening on the HH-A window, and in HH-B I stapled a shaving bag over the window so that Sophia’s teens couldn’t fly up and roost there.

So what did they do instead? One flew up onto the door to HH-A, but Buttercup gave her a thumping and she flew down. Two of them spotted the small high up window in Hen House A and flew up there - the 2 of them barely fit there! I got fed up and left them to figure it out.

Then Misty was mad she also couldn’t roost in the window in HH-A so she was going to roost in a nest box in Hen House B. Sheesh! I hauled her fluffy butt out and put her in a nest box in HH-A where she belongs.

The rest of them I left to figure it all out - I need to get HH-B DONE! Just the door needs to be hung, then they can all roost on there - tomorrow - that’s the plan!
Does it seem like they’re looking for a narrower perch to roost on than the shelf option? I know chickens technically sleep with their feet laid out and not gripping, but I have also read that they enjoy having their butts be able to hang lower than the rest of their bodies. Forgot where I read that.

I would play dead, and he would stop playing aggressively and lay down right next to me very close and gently. He was known to cover me with his wing, just like my late hen Rocks-Anne would do.
I’m fortunate to have such wonderful pets in my life.
The truth is, chooks don’t live as long as we would like them to. So we must be prepared for the inevitable. It’s never easy to lose one! :(
I agree, you have to be prepared for your chooks to pass one day... 😞
Onyx, your gettin' some new feathers, whatcha lookin' at? Come over here, I love you!!! 🐓❤️
