They usually give them a muscle relaxer before the euthanizing meds; as much for the people as for the pets. The muscle relaxer prevents the 'death tremors' that accompany the passing of the animals. Pretty much every animal does it - just varies how much - chickens have a lot of movement as they pass versus, say, a dog.The vet here did give Peanut a liquid knock-out medicine by mouth first, but that just put her into some sort of sleep. It took a couple of minutes for her. She then used another med by a vein to actually euthanize her. We waited until Peanut appeared to be truly unconscious and the vet said to not wait long after that because the sleep is not a normal sleep and if you wait it can feel distressing to them.
