Well it isn’t slowing him down! So far today he has bred 4 hens, chased Raven down when she was being a bad hen, he scarfed down a load of feed and has been in and out of the barn about 20 times. Right now he is standing watch as the crows and ravens are just squawking up a storm here. I think hunters are in the bush behind me as the horses are also very much on alert looking back there.
He’s being a good rooster

I think she would be unhappy separated from Bernie. Maybe I should just let her do her thing. It really is impossible to make the Chicken Palace totally dark because of the ventilation.
You know RC, I have been giving this some thought, and I am fairly certain that she will start to slow down her egg laying. I noted today they my hens Misty and Whiskers were slowing down this past summer, and prior to them moulting they really slowed up. Before that they were pretty much every day.

Current egg laying is not a predictor of future egg-laying. One can go by general breed types but that's not an individual bird.

I don't think it has to be totally dark. Not sure why I think this however. It's not like keeping a rooster quiet, isn't it more like duration of dimness, not blocking the tiniest glimmer of light? Or are chickens are like bees and can detect the height and angle of the sun through a tiny glimmer, no matter how small?

If you start this project earlier next year, then you would have the naturally decreasing light on your side during the time it takes to slow her hormones down over weeks, not days. I'm with @Ponypoor on that. But I'm with @BY Bob on the likelihood of success at this point, with this hen, given we are naturally at the least amount of daylight already and she hasn't budged in her egg-laying.

Judging by her comb, Widget will be the last one to lay eggs. That's ok. She earned a good long break (since September 2)!

I missed FBF.

But this picture was supposed to illustrate a technical problem I have, and it doesn't. I move pictures from my iphone to folders on my laptop, and sometimes they have half of the image blanked out with grey in the thumbnail. So I posted this one, which on my laptop is 7/8ths grey. Here it shows the whole thing.
