There is a grey and overcast sky today.

I can't be outside because I'm still ill here and waiting for a call from a locum doctor because our surgery is closed. I just can't beat this cold on my chest.

But princess has been fed and had has some treats. She's been out and about bless her. She's been making the best of things

Yesterday's picture coming up

Sorry to hear you’re still under the weather 😟

But have to say Princess Muck is looking beautiful 💕

I got mine too! And kiddo has already asked about getting "pompom" chickens. I told her that daddy is in charge of the money and I don't think he'll say yes this spring. We have to expand our run already!
Although we could expand the coop out fairly easily......no! Bad Jenn! No chicken math!

I would send you some half pompom chooks if you were nearby!

If winter stayed like it has been so far this year I would be happy. But we all know the snow and cold will come blasting in at some point.

It’s the extremes that get to me, too much snow too cold….

This is enough snow for me! And the chooks.

I just love this picture.

You know, chicken feet prints in the snow might be the only good thing about snow...

Excuse me a minute everyone while I recover from the heart attack my dad caused me. He did something this morning without telling me and left me to find it on my own. He decided it was time Poppet be allowed to free range unsupervised . I just went out to give everyone a treat and take a few pictures and I find the coop wide open and no Poppet. WHERE IS MY LITTLE SILKIE!! I start looking and calling for her, nothing. When I go past the horses I see a group dustbathing but no poppet. Go to the hay no Poppet. I make a entire sweep of the yard and end back up in front of the horses looking in their stalls afraid to find a trampled body. Said group of hens are still dustbathing and I hear her calls. I then take a closer look, in the middle of the pile is my pipsqueak happily dustbathing with the big girls. I had to pick her up to check for injuries, after all she is a spitfire and has always tried to pick fights with the girls when I am around. She is perfectly fine and while I was out there freezing no fights, none, zilch. I am giving her about another hour and she is getting put up. I just cannot leave her out to free range all day, I can't. Right now she has been out since about 8:30.

Awwwww 😊 such a cutie pie, I agree with not free ranging - these silkies just can’t run as fast as regular chooks.

Even my regular chooks can’t run as fast as a fox.

FYI - she is so adorable 😊

Also that warm water bucket is interesting- you don’t worry about the added humidity? I would think freezing vapors would hurt their combs or something along those lines.
The bucket has a tight fitting lid, so no moisture escapes. The corrugated cardboard (around sides & I cut a circle to tape to the lid) acts as a slight insulator so the bucket acts as a slow release of heat (plus, it also helps keep the bucket itself clean of poops - I usually cut a back-up circle for the cover/lid so if I use it multiple times - I can swap out the cover instead of bringing a poopy one into the house. The poopy cardboard then goes into the compost pile.) Since the bucket will sit on bedding, you don't need to worry about the bottom of the bucket RE: cardboard. I have used one during below zero F weather, and it did not freeze overnight - so it was still giving off heat (though not much, as the water was cold, but not frozen)
