Sleep is for the birds tonight. I have had 30 minutes and I give up. Grandma is having a spell tonight where every 30 minutes to a hour she is needing something, or seeing something. I think she finally may be settling down but me and mom agreed no point in laying down right now. The hospice nurse is supposed to be here early this morning. Right now we are tired but functional. If either one of us laid down to get a hour or two nap and then got up for the nurse we would be dead to the world and feel worse then we do now. It is also 0 degrees outside. 0 people. I cannot remember when it has been this cold. As soon as it gets daylight I have got to bundle up and get outside. My horses and chickens need water. No question it froze overnight. Water hose froze over 2 days ago so I am having to pack them inside to fill. I am so ready to send this weather back up north where it belongs. There is about 8 inches of white trash on the ground. Thankfully it is a dry *cough*snow*cough*. It might be bitterly cold but at least it is not soaking the layers of clothing making outside chores worse.

Fahrenheit! It was 17 (-8C) when I got home. Considering its been below zero (-17C) for the last several days (and hit -40 at one point, not including wind chill), HEAT WAVE! Sunbathing (provided it breaks through the cloud cover) is happening, now!
I'm sorry but I cannot imagine those temps. I now feel bad for moaning and griping a minute ago about 0. I am more adept and suffering through miserable heat and humidity, this cold kicks my butt.

Don't feel bad. It's colder than you usually deal with and system shocking.

Once it hits close to zero (F), anything colder than that feels about the same: REALLY COLD. Even a slight breeze makes it worse. You layer up, cover every bit of exposed skin you can, put a scarf over your mouth and nose, take your glasses off so you can see (they will fog up no matter what), and do what you must outside as quickly as possible. Even a decorative fabric scarf helps keep the air from knifing your lungs. The only critters moving around seem to be the magpies and crows. Keeping the kettle hot and snuggling down under a throw on the couch are a big part of dealing with it too.

I don't much like the heat above 85F, but I can deal with it. Add humidity to it and I'm miserable. (I suspect my Scandinavian heritage plays into that a bit.)

Warmer days taxes

Zero Fahrenheit or Celsius? Surely you must mean C?

Locked In
The girls are going to stay locked in even if the snow melts. This is a terrible photo but as I was driving home yesterday there was a juvenile Coopers Hawk on my neighbors fence. I tried to take the photo from the car so it's blurry.

That fence is very close to their coop. While I was trying to take the photo the hawk attacked something in his back yard.

I'm going to add more netting over a larger portion of the yard trying to cover the area around the apple trees. This will discourage the hawks but I can't dome the yard. It won't stop them.

So for a few weeks anyway, the tribe is going to live in the complex. It's for their own good. I need to come up with more entertainment for them.

On Sunday, I dumped a half bag of straw in the coop for them. That has been very entertaining and provides deep warm in the coop nesting for them. Wind chill was -1°F last night. Deep straw to stay warm if they want. Heaters are on.

My brain just freezes thinking about that. I literally cannot comprehend those temperatures.
Today here it is 12F (-11C) and I just want to hibernate. Later there will be strong winds so I guess that will make it even worse.
