Goose is gearing up to go broody. She spent about 3 hours hogging the porch box this afternoon. When she left after laying, she had pulled out some of her breast feathers to line the box. Say the word and if she commits I will set her with some Corona or Lilly eggs. Those 2 are the only Marans currently laying but they both lay the heavily speckled eggs. Can maybe get you both a girl and a boy if I only set her with 3 or 4 eggs.
You are very kind to offer but not this year.
I have some unavoidable travel coming up and I am worried enough about care for the critters I already have. It is not the year for me to add more.
Maybe next year.

If she would hold off another 2 weeks before committing I will set her with a few Owly eggs for myself. Sigh, I do not see that happening though the brat. Its ok, I have a feeling you will at some point once again deal with a broody girl. I'm sure there are ways to get some eggs delivered to whatever hen that may be. This way when she is done they would already be integrated into your flock.

So this happened 3 nights ago during yet another heavy rain.

I am beyond thankful it happened at night and not in the summertime. The shelter it provided has long been one of the chickens favorite hangout spots in the heat.

Now it looks like a very nice (but not safe) broody spot.... :idunnojust sayin' :idunno
Oh it is a open invitation to Momma Hen. It screams, hide over here and hatch those eggs. Does not help she and others have been inspecting the new cave. Thankfully she is not laying. At least I do not think she is.

Sounds like a quick visit with a shovel or pick axe to collapse it BEFORE she decides to put it to use.

Yes like Henny and her kids, they were already part of the flock, did I tell you that Bert is starting to get saucy?

He was all puffed up pecking his sister poor Betty! Then he sees Muffy and thinks hey your next!

Mwahahaha- yep Muffy is taller than him, she stand up tall gives him the evil eye and just dares him ‘come here kid’… hahahaha he screeches to a halt, back peddles and runs and hides behind Henny hahaha.

Today I noticed they have that voice change happening the ‘honk’ as RC calls it. My babies aren’t babies anymore 😢

I love how they are just part of the gang, tolerated and watched over, Mr P gets very anxious when I handle Bert and he screams blooming murder!
