And happy St.Patrick’s day from my green chickens. And that means I am officially late in sowing my garden seeds.
Ugh!

To be honest am I shocked I have a broody when I cannot be constantly out to gather the eggs, NO. What is surprising is I did not even know that hen was laying. I am also shocked that she chose the hillside to begin laying. The hillside is her last resort when I bust her up in her usual spots. All I can do now is pray. Pray she does not freeze and pray that she is hidden enough from predators. If she is successful then I have to hold my breath and pray she gets them off the hill safely.
And she did! With your brothers help she and her two babies made it safe!

What a hen - I love Momma Hen 💕

This beautiful guy walked a mile from his place across two roads, a creek and heavy woods to our house. It took him three or more days, 'cause we heard crowing for a few days getting closer and closer, and one morning here he was crowing outside our house.

A scenario suggested to me was that a coyote or some predator had chased him, or he chased it, and he went beyond where he knew where he was, so he had been calling out trying to find his way back. This was before we had chickens, I fed him some cornmeal and water, and eventually caught him with help, and we put him wrapped in a sheet in the trunk of my car. We rode around the hill asking where he belonged. When we finally got to his house we could see other chickens just like him. I opened the trunk, and he had gotten out of the sheet and just exploded to freedom. Then he calmly walked over to three hens who came over to greet him. All was good.
What a wonderful story. Well done on your part. 🥰

What seeds do you plant this early?
I normally sow everything around now.
Some I start in pots in the garage but most can direct sow by St Patrick’s day.
I haven’t even bought seeds yet though I have some saved from last year’s harvest.
Guess what I am doing today. In between cleaning up after Babs I will order seeds!

I need to weed the cactus while it’s still in it’s winter shrivelled state. Before those evil thorns come to life!

Yes, inquiring minds want to know. I’ve never heard of a 20% protein layer feed. That sounds awesome.

Yup - that is the Kalmbach one I have switched to.
So far so good. They seem to like it.
