In a few weeks I will be heading off to Africa and then Europe and then Asia.
I am anxious enough about leaving animal care to others for such a long time without having to worry about babies as well.
And that is not even counting the fact that I have Marek’s in the flock (that is what killed Eli) and so introducing unvaccinated chicks risks their lives.
So no. Not gonna happen.
Oof, those are watertight reasons. Definitely very stressful.

Last year I got April chicks, but between the cockerels (they were sexed 😖) and severe cross beak… I ended up starting over with June chicks. Only to go on a three week Europe trip later in July. I left them with sitters at only five weeks old.

I had so much anxiety! Well, they survived… but were also much wilder, as the sitters couldn’t really handle them without risking the big girls attacking them.

Jaffar has mellowed during his time with me. He used to attack me if I got close to his ladies. But now he just tries to stare me down, if I’m in the coop.
He always manages to get between me and the girls. I tell him that it’s alright, I won’t hurt your ladies! I guess he’s just being a rooster, doing what a roo must do!

Pastel still attacks me. I hate to admit it, because no matter how smart I think he is, he is just a chicken with instincts to protect his hens. I wish that he would trust me. I need to pick him up and put him in his timeout coop so that he doesn’t attack me. His timeout coop is a little TSC coop where I put him while I go away for vacation so that he doesn’t attack his chicken-sitters.
It kinda hurts my feeling that he attacks me everyday, which sounds ridiculous to me because he is a chicken- he can’t know that I won’t hurt his hens. But I have raised him since he hatched, and he used to trust me with his life. I hope that he will calm down as he gets older, but he is already two and a half years old.

I know that feeling, You cant blame him though, and there is a chance he wont calm down.

Every time Pastel starts getting roo on you, you must continue picking him up and holding him, until he gets used to it. It might take many years for this to happen. Sir Jaffar has been an indoor rooster for most of his Cochin life. Est. 8 years old now.

Yeah, I just have to hope that he will calm down. I’m not going to rehome him or send him to freezer camp. He’s too special. He’s my first ever chook. So I’m stuck with him whether I like it or not

It does sound like broody buk-buk, as does the fluffed figure. If she's doing that anytime she's off the nest (for short periods), then yes, she's broody.
Yes. That video was before she went to the nest. It was early morning. She flew down off the roost and met Babs on her way to breakfast. And that was her reaction. That is why it seemed so strange. It was like a reaction to meeting Babs.
