In Albis Ate A Bird.
In Albis found a small, featherless, presumably dead baby bird and ate it before I could stop her. Do you think she'll be ok? Anything I should do? She practically swallowed it.
She will be fine, chickens are opportunistic feeders, they will eat anything they can catch.

Be careful people. Use eye protection when handling your little ones. Two of mine jumped up on my shoulder together, and one pecked my eye hard. My eyesight cost $3k per eye for cataract surgery. My fault for dropping my guard for only seconds!
OMGosh! Oh no! As you know I am well aware of those pecks. Gosh I sure hope you’re ok. Make sure you get an antibiotic for that eye. You know where those beaks have been!

:sick

That is a lovely place to rest. Will you bury her or leave her?

I don’t doubt the attacking chickens could have complex reasons for their actions- it’s interesting that you are able to go back in the footage and see that it may not have been thoughtless at all. If perhaps still brutal.
We buried her in a deep hole right beside where I took the picture. There’s no way I would be able to bring myself to just leave her lying there. We have too many predators, not to mention my dog.

@TX Chick Noob
Personally I'd be checking over and over, which chicken instigated the attack and kept going back.

It's only my thoughts , I think it could happen again. If it were me I'd keep them from the rest they are instigating the others into violent behaviour.

When Agatha was ill, nothing like this happened, on the contrary most kept their distance and flexi became supportive.
The one who kept checking her and then pecking her again was not the first one to attack. And I have very rarely seen her be aggressive to anyone. But I am definitely keeping a close eye on her.

:goodpost:seriously, I really do not wanna know the bacterial load on a chickens beak, they peck everyyyythinnngggg! Just like toddlers wanting to touch everything wherever they go and then put 90% of what they touch right in their mouths 👄 🤦‍♀️

My chicks waterer is always full of shavings. I’m continually cleaning it out. They are messy eaters too! :old :he
Yep, chicks & chickens are messy. W/ our last batch of chicks January 2024 we used chick nipple waterers and chick port feeder and never had crumble waste or water spills/drips. We even use nipple waterers and larger port feeders outdoors for the bigger girls. Since we dont plan on acquiring any more new birds (we're getting too old & disabled) we will use the small chick single port feeder for oyster shell now & mount it to the coop side. We even put the small chick nipple waterers outdoors now so there are several feeding/watering stations in the yard.

OUTDOORS -- A 2-GAL INSULATED RUBBERMAID THERMOS W/ NIPPLE WATERERS -- THIS SILKIE WOULD LET THE WATER DRIBBLE ON HER & TOOK SHOWERS UNDER IT. SADLY THIS NIPPLE ATTACHMENT IS NO LONGER MADE. A NEW CUP VERSION IS NOW SOLD WHICH WE WERE DISAPPOINTED WITH. WE CHERISH THIS LAST MANUFACTURED NIPPLE ATTACHMENT BECAUSE THE THERMOS KEEPS THE WATER ICE COLD DURING HEATWAVES.
