Today I tried putting her in the crate at day time and she sits on the floor made of mesh. What could I do to improve the jail ?
Put a piece of 2x4 in there. She can perch/sit on that.

Also, get a small feeder and waterer and put them in there. I just broke Widget for the second time this year. She stays in the crate for 2 days, minimum before I let her out. I let her out at lock up. If she goes to roost, she's fine, if she gets in a nest, she's in "jail" for another day.

Next spring, girl, next spring.

Any ideas?

I can't figure out what Phyllis goal is.

Does she want to help with the brood?

Does she want to just sleep in that nest box?

What might be her thought process here?

I don't want to stress Phyllis but I'm afraid she is going to damage an egg or run Glynda off.

Any thoughts?

Any of her eggs in the box?

Doesn’t look like she is running anyone off.
Maybe as she feels a poorly she just likes the comfort of snuggling.

Fathers Day is up and down the street today. Idiots shooting off firecrackers. Fire Dept already put out one fire in the homeless encampment. Our newest Silkies just sitting by the back door preening and ignoring the idiotic noises!
Wow that’s rather rude of people.

Glad the chooks are taking it in stride.

The coop we have was made by rehabbing a very old shed that was falling apart. I took the best half of it and made a wall in the middle of it. It has a dirt floor and many gaps in the old wood siding. I have tried to sure up gaps and the whole thing has a hardware cloth predator skirt made of 1/4 inch hardware cloth as is the run. There is an attic which is difficult to secure but the single biggest issue we have had is from rats/tunneling critters.

My husband and I are currently looking at options. We have a large pole barn on the property. It’s in good shape and we might be able to build out a coop inside of it.
That is what I did.

I took my shavings/bedding storage area and made that into Hen House-A and Hen House-B, I also took Truly’s big 10x20 stall and made it into the Summer House. It’s all inside the barn so it’s snug in the winter and the main part of the barn is cool. Unfortunately the Hen Houses get like an oven because of the sunlight shining on that side of the barn - northwest corner - from about 11am till after 8 at night.

As you know my gang have the run of the barn all day when I am at work. When I get home and on the weekends they get outside. They have a lot of stuff to entertain themselves with in the barn.
