Well I am about to go out and settle everyone for the night, can’t wait for the rain to stop again, I need to go out now.

You may need to do some sort of round roost as they're already demonstrating their willingness and desire to fly and perch UP. Apparently they like round, not flat roosts. Tree branch/fence post mount securely....keep their tiny feet (even as adults) in mind....maybe a broom handle would be a better size for them.

Cuckoo had wierd markings, so she earned the name.

French Marans of all varieties all have feathered legs. American strains of those varieties have clean legs. Not sure why

I personally like feathered legs, and it might give them an advantage in cold weather.

From what I read, the clean legs came from the British lines. Something about not liking feather feet at the time. (Which is a puzzler as Queen Victoria had been gifted cochins with feathered feet and she loved them). Back to Marans

In coming to America, the French Marans (black copper and at least 1 other) got brought on from France while the Cuckoo Marans were brought in from England.

I was thinking of making a roost out of a large branch, something with various widths so they had a choice as to what they prefer.

If I am keeping them I need a warm place for them in the winter. All this needs to be started now, winter is just around the corner, and I have a feeling this winter will be good old fashioned brutal winter.

Aw! Gotcha! I love the feathered feet, and I don’t have any issues with muddy feet, even Henny’s feet stay lovely white and dry. They will get wet and muddy outside but when she comes in they dry fast and stay clean.
