Hubby and I were talking and he would like y'alls imput.

Should we get more chicks to grow up with the polish pair? Since the original plan was letting them grow with the incubator eggs and those eggs are now STINKY and not growing. I don't know if they would be safe to integrate as just a pair, since the silkies were older than my 4 big girls when we added them and they all deferred to the silkies being in charge.

He is totally cool with getting 2-4 more chicks, whatever the minimum is at the farm store. We obviously had planned on adding a bunch anyways haha.

I have integrated 2 many times with no issue. The danger is that 1 doesn't make it. Then you are integrating a lone chicken. Which can be much harder.

I think you would be fine adding 2 to 4 right now since they will be close in age.

What I would do first though is make a short list of breeds you want or are interested in. Go in prepared so you do not get overwhelmed by the choices offered and make a spur of the moment decision you regret. I'm not sure what farm store you are using but I general think of either Rural King or Tractor Supply when I hear farm store. Do not go crazy, most times you will not find exotic or rarer breeds offered. In general they will have Orpingtons, sex links, EE's, Barred Rocks, leghorns, Sapphire gems, Wyandotte's and Midnight Majesty Marans. Then you may find a few more breeds that are rotated out weekly along with normally a bantam bin that can have silkies, old english game, Seabright or belgium d'uccles. In my area the bantams go fast so there have never been any offered when I am shopping for chicks. I did spot silkies once, long before I caved and fell in love with them so I did not give them a second look. One time at Rural King I spotted white crested polish about 3 years ago, once. At the time no interest, now though, if I were in the market for chicks maybe 1 could sneak a ride home. My biggest regret is passing up Chocolate Orps the one time I saw them offered. Again it was at Rural King who offers chicks year round. They were there around Christmas and I just did not want to raise chicks right then. They have never been offered again and the employee's claim they can no longer get them.

Last year when I specifically went after chicks I called ahead to make sure they had Barred Rocks. Grandma wanted them and that was what I was after. I get there and then look around. Spotted the EE's, sis had been nagging she wanted blue or green eggs so I got 2. The minimum order for my state is 6. 2 barred rocks and 2 EEs now what else do I want. I see speckled sussex, no brainer, looked into them before I got my Marans, I will have 2. I then saw the Wyandotte's, both silver and gold laced. I wanted 1 each for eye candy and stopped there. Sadly I lost the silver based EE and both Wyandotte's within 48 hours. I do not regret my choices though, those suspects and Rocks are definitely eye candy and I love miss Owly.

I already have problems with my Sapphire Splash, she's production bred and has had probably 10 bad eggs since she started laying. But she's always biting me too

Lacing, fuzzy feet, or cheeky poofs are the highest priority.

One should never pass up a Polish. Plenty of good sized white eggs and personalities to keep you entertained for years.

We've experienced that getting only 2 chicks means we're doomed if one dies. We began getting no less than 3 chicks so that if one dies at least there's a pair to grow up together. Getting 4+ chicks is ideal IMHO. Let us know your decision

I passed on the Polish not long after I hatched out Branch. I was just falling for the silkies. I still do not have a Polish, I have a polkie. A Polkie who looks like more polish then anything else. She is confident, bold and I do love her/him. I will not rule out a Polish one day though now. My brother, my new partner in crime as far as chickens are concerned saw a short on tick-tock. A Polish rooster that had something about "feeling Puerto Riccan" on it. He came charging into my room the other evening to show me and demanded I get a "Puerto Riccan" chicken . You have Adele who you fight me over in claiming is yours, half polish. You will get the same vibe from him/her. Oh no, Adele needs a full "Puerto Riccan" friend. I told him he finds one, I'll raise it. He works beside Tractor Supply. I do not think I will have to sneak home a Polish, he will be the one to do it.

You won't even sneak it. Your car is gonna drive you to the store with the Polish chicken and make you get one much like what happened to Ponypoor earlier this year.

Aw I am so sad to hear this, yes what a jerk.

There are no big stores still in much of Newfoundland so people still have gardens where potatoes cabbage and turnip are grown and put into cold strange, raise ducks and chickens and a steer for meat.

Also fish still gets salted and dried and moose is hunted.

Berries are picked and preserved.

Shopping in town is done for canned goods and baking goods. But if you’re 3 hrs to a big town you don’t do that too often, maybe once a month.
