The temperature dropped a little so I set out to mend the step inside the Chicken Palace.
I had forgotten a few things. 90% humidity makes even 85 degrees pretty unbearable and mosquitoes.
I have made a start but i couldn't bear to be outside any more. I am bitten all over and so sweaty I didn't even notice it was raining when I came outside of the Chicken Palace.
Feels like another ice-cream day.

Tax: Pooh is looking a bit disheveled. Maybe starting to molt? Maybe just a bad hair day in the humidity.

Oh dear. Sorry to laugh. But it is funny!

Glad I made you laugh. Years from now, as I look back, and see the pale lavender spots on the bathroom floor, I am sure I will laugh, too!

I said it elsewhere : I really admire those of you who tend to your chickens on their own. Almost half the time I have to do some health care without my partner, disaster happens. It's never like on the Youtube videos where a pampered hen lays happily on her owner's lap wrapped in a comfy towel.. and often like what happened to you.

A picture of the sheeps from this morning. They are finally as high as they will stay in the mountain, in the highest of the village's shepherd cabin, 2000 m /6500 feet.

I really enjoyed @Ponypoor and @RebeccaBoyd's older pictures of horses and ponies. As a teen I kept all my horsey pictures in two big albums and throughout moves in life I've lost those. I only have now with me the photos that were kept loose. These two are special. They are from the month I spent in Russia in St Petersburg in 1993, when I was 15 through a french-russian friendship association. The first one - I came from classical English riding so it was very new for me to try this. The second one is Karagöz, the horse I rode regularly there, a stallion that I was told was Akhal-teke. I only ever rode stallions in Russia as they didn't geld their horses then, and this is the only supposedly Akhal-teke I've ever seen.

And an Akhal-teke how beautiful, and such athletic horses, I am surprised they are not more popular over here.

What wonderful memories, so sorry to hear you have lost your photos, but the most important ones are those in your memory. At the end of the day those are the ones that matter

When I visited my friend in Egypt I also noted none of the horses there were gelded. Except my friends horse King Solomon tje half Arab/Thoroughbred, apparently he was an aggressive stallion so the hardware had to go. After that he was an amazing horse.

I hear you on that humidity, I was drenched by the end of the afternoon of mowing grass and cleaning up here.

The chooks were helpful, when I went to check them, Jaffarra thought some dry dirt was needed to cool me off, she shook dirt all over me when I bent down to say hi - lovely

I will probably not be on for the rest of the day. I have to go outside and dig a grave for Bubba. I am going to bury him under the Mimosa tree beside Gracie. My boys foot has busted open and it is time. I know what I have to do, and I have done it once before. It does not make it any easier. Thank you my dear boy for being a true gentleman of a Rooster. I have treasured our 3 years together. I wish we had more time but I promise you, your girls will be ok.

So all, on a lighter note after @RebeccaBoyd 's post.

While I am not at the moment laughing, I know I will when I look back.

I have a pullet with a head wound
(too many boys, tore the back of her head, then started pecking - straight run means way too many boys to girls ratio. I usually process the extra boys at about 5-6 months - but they were just being terrible to the girls, and I sent 10 to auction Tuesday with hubby - so we are now down to 24 'preteens' at 4 mos. old, 5 are boys - of which I will end up keeping 2, but couldn't completely decide on Tuesday - the other 3 will go to freezer camp in about 6 weeks)

Anyways, I had her inside and was changing the dressing and checking on the wound....and went to apply Vetrycin (yes, the purple stuff), and she shook her head at exactly the WRONG moment. The bottle shook, things went flying...and I now look like I have skittle pox (only all purple) on the bottom half of my face, my chest & neck (had a scoop neck tank top on), all of my left arm and both my hands! Plus, all over the BR counter and floor! I have just gone through nearly a full bottle of rubbing alcohol trying to get it up....it is now pale lavender spots on the floor & a large smudge on the counter. My face just has pale 'spots', but arms and hands are still pretty bright purple! (I had scrubbed my hands/arms prior to working with her for infection control...but hadn't washed my face - so some of the natural oils helped mitigate there, but the neck, arms and hands are pretty brilliant in color.





Moral of the story: Always have help when doing anything with chickens. If it doesn't prevent this, at least you will have company in your misery!


I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the moment. But, as hubby says:

"Memories, dear, memories. You will look back and remember this and laugh about it."

I have been there. Over the years I have enjoyed horse wormer, spat out and conveniently dropped into my mouth by any number of naughty horses. Jabbed myself with rabies vaccine, sprayed Aluspray (silver aluminum powder) in my face (takes days to get rid of), face plant in horse poop, have had numerous pee covered tails slapped in my face, liquid poopy cow tails slapped in my face, sprayed in the face with pee by a randy naughty male rabbit (at a Fair so couldn’t go home to change).

And now the chickens open up a whole new world of things to get smacked in the face and head with
