How is your sister getting on with your little Roo? Any updates?

He's much better and got put outside for a bit with his hens. Still a bit lopsided.

He was a little too excited to show off and got a little rough but calmed down pretty fast after numerous complaints from the hens.

I suppose you have done the Epsom salt vent soak and oil inside the vent? That has always been helpful for mine. Princess went inside the coop to lay her egg after that. But she still drops one off her perch occasionally but she is an old girl, a bit like me

She did get the soak and vent treatment as far as I know.

I let @CCsGarden take care of most of the treatments.

Do RIRs also have that problem?

Any high egg producer can get laying issues. It's a research fact that 45% Leghorns develop ovarian cancer and therefore have been used in human cancer research. Ovarian tumor/cancer issues so far has no cure. Oddly enough we had a prolific egg-laying Silkie still laying into her 6th year who had a bleeding ovarian tumor and had to be put down at the vet ofc.

Baby and juvenile eyes are very pretty. Our Dominiques had blue eyes as youngsters till they turned the usual reddish-bay color as near adults!

I can jump in here on Marans and Marans crosses.
In my experience with both I am going to call them good layers. In peak laying conditions I get 5 eggs a week from them. Here is the catch though. With the exception of Daisy and Squirrel every single one of them are habitual broodies. They are also a pain in the butt to break. This is the first year I have broke everyone up, no one has given up easily. Holly my last original girl, is 4 and broody currently and already a week into it. Goose the Marans x Silkie, also broody and if left alone would be hatching chicks anytime. These broody breaks, even when they do not get to hatch as it takes them so long to break they get a 4 week or longer break from laying is good for them. I believe I will be fighting these broody girls for several more years to come.

Good to know. I don’t mind the broodies, though Whiskers 6weeks was starting to worry me.

Oh and this reminded me. Tassels is a Marans cross. When she lays she lays 4-5 eggs a week but she has spent most of the summer broody. I lost count. I think 4 times in total and stubborn as a mule. She would eventually come out of it, go back to laying a week later, lay about 5 eggs over the course of a week, and then go broody again. So I would say she is more often not laying than she is laying!
But you have to remember that she is very pretty and very fluffy so that makes up for everything!

Marty was a habitual broody when I got her, the lady didn’t want to deal with her being broody anymore.

She has been broody once since I got her
