Safe in the valley…. Not really. This one was close by. Three stores burned down: IMG_0947.jpeg

My drive to the mountains is 45 minutes away. I’m safe in the valley, but I have mountain property too. At 7500ft near camp Nelson. I always worry about it getting burnt out.
I didn't know the fires were mainly in the mountains. Is that just because of that is where the forests are? Or is there more to it than that?

Aren't you the clever lass! A crotcheted egg-gatherer! I LOVE it! Do u use patterns or your own natural creativity?

An apron for us would be more than we needed because we have only 5 laying Silkies and two of them are 4 yrs old & probably lay only 1 more yr. DH & I need only a smallish cushy pouch we could hang on the coop w/ inside criss-cross dividers for 4 eggs maximum -- the criss cross pockets inside the smallish pouch would cushion each collected egg ~ but commercial egg collection containers are way too big for our needs and/or not cushioned. I can't sew for myself any more or I would've made one out of padded quilted material long ago (I don't crotchet & now can't sew ~ arthritis)!

Those babies are so darn cute! Why do they grow so darn FAST?!
Thanks! I bought this pattern and it's working up very nicely!
I could make you an egg basket with 4 dividers if you like, I've been off and on working on a pattern and finally figured out what to do! I was overcomplicating things as usual haha.

I think the moulting and this heat has got to princess. It's still watering 💩 but i read this may be because she's drinking lots.

Gah, major slip up this morning.

The last week dad has been letting the chickens out of the coop in the morning before he goes to work. He has also been letting out the littles and closing up the coop door once the big girls are out. I'm always out there a hour or two later just to check and make sure it was done.

This morning it is raining. I put on my pot of coffee and while trying to look out the windows I cannot tell if the girls got let out or not. So outside in the downpour I go. I see right away the coop door is open. I'm thinking ok he forgot to let loose the littles. 3 seconds later I have full on panic as out pops a silkie only to turn and run back in when the rain pelted her. Crap. The chicks have only free ranged twice under supervision for a few minutes and they have yet to intermingle with the adults.

This mornings rain is a blessing. The big chickens are all in with the horses and the chicks are terrified of the rain so they stayed in the coop. I did numerous head counts, all 7 are accounted for.

Mom told me he was running late for work so since all is well I will not yell at him this evening. I'm still not ready for the chicks to be out and about yet unsupervised. The silkies while growing rapidly are still small. I also do not trust Randy just yet with them. He has given me no reason not to, but, I want to personally be there when he meets them without a protective barrier. I do think he has imprinted on them. I have caught him around the coop head low staring at them. Not in a aggressive way though. He has also sort of talked to them from the outside.

I know I am over protective and need to bite the bullet and let them start free ranging soon. Loosing Branch to the hawk has shook me. I look at the silkie chicks and see "chicken nugget" snacks to a hawk right now. They are happy and thriving not free ranging so for now, nope, stay in the coop while you all grow some more.

Ash laid a fart egg yesterday! Hubby is way excited to see if it has a tiny yolk or if it's just white. View attachment 3920260
Teehee! That could just be a pullet's regular small egg :D.

Here was our Silkie's fart egg which has a little yolk in it. It was about the size of a hummingbird egg.

This is the Silkie w/ the fart egg who had a bleeding ovarian tumor the following year. She always had issues crying & very agitated clawing hard in nestboxes when she needed to lay an egg from her very first pullet egg till her last year of life. We knew something was "off" about her laying behavior compared to the other Silkies and other standard breed hens, poor baby :(. When she finished laying she was back to her sweet self again. It hurts so much to know something was wrong and nothing we could do to fix it!

Mine don't eat banana. Won't touch the stuff.
Momma Hen loved banana's. It was one of the first foods we got her to eat out of our hand in her taming process. Chicks that were raised by her also still enjoy Banana's. If I have old banana's it is a special treat for Karen and Squirrel only. The rest of the flock treat them with disdain.
