Those are bargains! We paid $85 EACH for DNA sexed females & we picked them up in person (shipping would be $65 additionally). Plus we had to wait 9 months for our order to be filled on a waiting list! Now the Silkie price has gone up even more. Even roos aren't cheap any more.
And that $25 is for straight run day old chicks!

Randy is trying and proving himself. Mom is not thrilled with a game rooster. She is his toughest critic. That said, he impressed her a bit yesterday. She was mowing the grass. She always has several of the hens on her heels when she mows after the bugs that are stirred up. Randy was on the creek bank watching her and the hens. Judy, Dottie and Spot got out in front of her and she was heading towards them with the mower. Randy ran and put himself between the hens and the mower and raised his hackles at her. She said she paused not sure if he was threatening to attack her or the mower and yelled at him to move. He stood his ground until one of the suspects came up to him and pecked him on the head to make him move aside. She continued on and he kept a eye on her and the girls but did not offer to do anything else. He listens to the girls according to her, score a point for Randy. He protected the girls in his mind without attacking her or the mower, another point for him in her books. Randy is no Bubba though. It has never been any secret that between Bubba and Branch, Bubba was always the better rooster. Branch was the little $hit that she was forced to like because I loved him so. She misses Branch, she has no one to argue with and crow at her constantly and is perfectly fine with one of the silkies being a boy to keep. It hurt her to loose Bubba. It has bothered her so much that yesterday she had me go through my eggs when she realized Raven is broody. Raven now has 3 eggs that were 11 days old from Corona, Holly and Bunny. If there is a shot at pure Marans they would come from those 3 as they still do not like or accept Randy. It is a long shot they will hatch but she is willing to take the chance. If these fail this fall she is going to contact the guy we got the original Marans from. I can have my silkie aggravator, she needs a big gentle giant.
I will put in good thoughts for 3 lovely chicks hatching.

If you were closer you could have her. She is spoiled, one of dad's favorites. Her spot is the recliner beside him or his pillow. She is smart, dad is one of those "animals belong outside" people. He does not like them on his pillow partially due to his allergies. Since she started walking around she has worked on him.
My mum would be most unhappy if I showed up with more animals haha.

We have nearly 4 acres, but the coop is right next to the neighbors fence. Since their dog poos in our yard all the time, I don't think I'll care what they think. Their dogs...pit bull mixes...may be issue.
Just curious ~ if you have a fence how do dogs get on your property to poo? Years ago we had a chainlink fence w/ one sturdy chainlink gate but the 2nd gate was flimsy wood that a German Shepherd broke to get into our yard years ago ~ lucky our birds were locked in the run & a neighbor chased off the stray! We now have block walls & iron bar gates. But you know, it still doesn't keep out night critters like opossums, raccoons, or coyotes from the yard. Good thing hens go down at dusk & get locked in for the night.

Blockwall w/ redwood privacy fencing on top of block wall to left in photo & barn coop in rear under patio roof. End of season raised garden beds in center.

Block wall + barn coop & dog kennel wire run. Hens free roam the yard by day & only use the coop to lay eggs then go to roost in the coop at dusk when we lock up the run.

And that $25 is for straight run day old chicks!
If we ordered straight run chicks it would've been $75 each from a private breeder who takes special orders on a waiting list. Things cost more here cuz keeping poultry is rarely allowed anywhere in L.A. County so the demand is high but supply is low.

We could go to our local feed store
(several miles away) and get Mareks vaccinated straight run Silkies at about $10 each but the feed store only offers white Silkies that come from wholesale Belt Hatchery in Calif. I don't do white poultry so we go thru private NPIP breeders who are rare around So. Calif.
