Only 1 Mum Left

It pains me greatly to have to share this news. Just after midnight on 8/30, Glynda passed away.

It was something respiratory that seemed to move lightning fast. The first sign of symptoms was some panting on 8/28. Unfortunately for me and her, it was way over 90F, 32C, extremely humid, and everyone except the littles was in some form of distress. Therefore I attributed it to the heat. Yesterday morning I really knew something was up. Here she was at that time.

I determined that I was going to try some Baytril to help her out and waited for nightfall. When I went to treat her I could tell I was too late. She was laboring so hard to breathe that I figured she was more likely to aspirate than for the antibiotic to have any effect.

And then she was gone.

Here she was when I went to treat her. This will be difficult to watch so I will put it behind a spoiler.

Spoiler: Glynda Towards the end

Less than 48 from presentation of symptoms to death tells me this was likely not bacterial. She has not laid an egg since she went broody so that should rule out any reproductive breakdown. That mostly leaves viral and of course my greatest fear, bird flu.

If it is bird flu I will likely lose them all in short order and there will be nothing I can do about it. They say within 7 days.

She stayed away from the tribe yesterday but her children kept checking on her. Versace even slept with her last night. They are the most likely to have been exposed and I will have to watch them closely for symptoms.

I've lost my beautiful white lady who laid the blue eggs. The chicken that would climb up onto me and visit. I am heartbroken and I am in serious fear that we will lose them all.

My sweet Glynda. Taken from us far too soon. You will never be forgotten.

I have been dealing with stuff here also with sniffly noses, squinty rhuemy eyes, and there was Sophia with a swollen belly I am sure is not related to any reproductive issue…. I am sure it’s the weather though. So humid I am thinking mold or some funky bacterial infection.

I would not worry about bird flu it’s too early in the season for migratory birds to be passing this along. I feel it would be extremely unlikely for this at the time of year.

But just to be safe…. Just keep an eye on everyone. I will keep my fingers crossed and think good thoughts. But I really think with the amount of humidity you been experiencing this summer it’s more likely something else.

Can you keep the group split up for a week? Just to be safe? Gosh I am so saddened to hear this.

Laying Again

Looks like Lady Featherington might be thinking about laying an egg. Versace is staying with her. I'm guessing she needs some reassurance after losing her other mum.

The pockets are deep and it's fairly stable when full too.

i bet w/ the eggs left in it it would really sell !! Look at the colors!!! Beautiful! & the pockets look deep & secure too.

I brought home a few spring rolls yesterday from town. I ate my fill of those shrimp and vegetables treats. The kids were very happy to assist with consumption of the remainder of the meal.
CeeCee is around the corner eating a shrimp smart chicken!

how likely are you to check that there's no onions in prepared food? i am so freakin' suspicious of processed pkg'd or takeout foods

Let's hope the others survive this. Is there something you could give them as a preventative? And something for their immune systems

Everyone is mixed together. It's already too late to separate.

This is why I so wanted them to have the chance to be moms when they went broody. Maleficent never got the chance. I messed up Phyllis chance.

Glynda was such a wonderful mom to them right up until the end. Hopefully there are two new hens that now know what a great mom should be like.

Princess had the best ever day today . She was so excited by the two little barking dogs next door and the cat running around, when the cat was cleaning himself she'd go right by him and started preening her feathers. It was a real joy seeing her today
