Last week’s synopsis

Post in thread 'Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock'

Our condolences go out to RebeccaBoyd and the lose of her cherished hen Bunny. The day prior she lost Blueberry also. I remember when Bunny hatched her chicks in Rebecca’s house on the chesterfield.

They are adorable. Brahmas have been on my wish list for a while now. I like feather footed breeds. I have cochins, Marans, and silkies. One day I will have a Brahma hen to add to the collection.
They are one of my favorites! I highly recommend getting them eventually. The hard part is picking which variety you want (I would get all 3 for good measure)

We have breeders here for various breeds but chicks are sold straight run so I don’t buy them. I don’t need to get rid of more Roos. I have three here that need to go bye-bye asap. Like today. They are causing a lot of stress for me and the other chooks.

It’s also not fair to keep them segregated. 😞
From heartache we've gone w/ auto-sexing chick breeds or DNA-sexed chicks to avoid the roo surprises. That limits choosing some other lovely breeds but that's ok not to go thru cockerel surprises.

Hatcheries & private breeders offer sexed chicks here. The only straight-run birds are bantam breeds cuz they are too tiny to vent sex like normal sized breeds,

Our DNA-sexed Silkies most likely will be our last chickens anyway since we are getting old & less healthy ourselves. If these birds live another 10-11 yrs like our Violet did that means i'll be over 90 when they're still around. If DH wasn't younger than me I wouldn't have ordered our last 3 Silkies but he wanted them & takes care of them. Chickens are easier for us to care for & less expensive than cats/dogs ~ like licenses, food, vets, & vaccinations.

I have also gender tested a couple of batches of chicks here. First batch was all pullets 😊

Then next were Betty and Bert. Could have saved my money as I ended up keeping both. But now Bert has to go 😞

I too love feather-footed breeds & mostly because almost all of them have small or no combs and some come w/ crests & beards too. All are so cute too whether standard or bantam.

The following website lists over 1 dozen feather-legged breeds but I found the Breda fowl and Malines breed missing on the list (probably because they are European breeds not common in the USA).
