Sorry if I miss anyone. I've been a bit busy.
Thanks light! Much appreciated - I also get bahind these days and appreciate anything I have missed ♥️

Your setup is so different from ours ~ you have way bigger facilities, larger flock, many different ages, different health issues at one time, & a variety of standard & bantam breeds & you offer an accommodation available for all needs of the hens. But even though you have ground nests available for Silkies they will still want to be w/the big birds on a higher level so you are getting hanging neck Silkies in your setup. It's just what's going to happen when there's such a variety of options.

I'm thinking that's why breeders I've dealt with keep certain breeds like Silkies separated from standard breeds. Silkies are a little 2-lb bird but w/all the desires the big breeds want ~ but the little guys don't fly: that's a hindrance they don't accept as their handicap. A standard breed or bantam flyer that loses balance on a high perch flaps wings to glide to the floor. Silkies flap but fall harder w/almost useless wing power. Silkies are great jumpers/poor flyers ~ the little dears.

Our situation is different. After many years of dealing w/ different breeds we made the decision to attrition down to just Silkies in the yard. They are a relatively hardy breed for our climate, do better in an all-same breed flock, & their eggs are the biggest of bantam breeds ~ plus they are great family lap chickens.

Because we have only one standard Dominique left w/ 5 Silkies we have the ability to keep the Silkies from wanting to reach the perch the Dom uses. The 5 Silkies are content to use the coop nests to sleep. Silkies want to roost as high as any other chicken & walking up our steep coop ramp gives them the feeling already that they are high off the ground & don't seem to want the coop perch the Dom uses.

When/if our old Dom passes before the 5 Silkies we will probably remove the coop perch altogether & add a couple more floor nest boxes (although one night DH saw 4 Silkies trying to pile into one 11"x11" nestbox!! Too bad he didn't have his camera! Chickens do keep us laughing!
I really really like how your hen house is near your house - it’s the one thing I can’t do here. The barn is about 400’ to the house. Which is fine, but I would like hens that tap at my window too! 😊

I also want to point out that although it looks bright and light in there it is actually pitch black at night.

My infrared on the camera makes it look bright.

Crazy hen 😳
It's smart of Marty to make that leap while she was awake ~ if she dropped that distance in a torpor sleep it wouldn't be safe, she took her time making a judgment leap. We really need to give chickens more credit than we do.

Chickens have such great eyesight in the dark. Yesterday I caught a huge cricket to feed to whichever hen ran up 1st. Ginny, Suzu, & Dana split it apart playing keepaway. A tiny miniscule drop of cricket gut dropped in the leaves but Dana spied it in one lick! How can they see such tiny specks?! Had a Budgie that stared at our ceiling for the longest time before I could see it ~ a teeny tiny spider crawling along!

Teehee! W/ our window taps comes the smeary glass & the doormat poops :laubut yeah, wouldn't trade it for all the TV's in the world!

The shelter did not come out yesterday. Honestly I doubt they will. I did notice they put up a add on facebook looking to place him in a farm group. I know of 2 local rescues on there so I shared the add to them and gave them a bit of backstory on him. 1 of them flat out refused, stated they do not deal with known biters. The 2nd one said they would try to work with the owners to get him. Both said they would contact the animal shelter personally to see if they can get pull to make them do something.

We are not going to take him on, this is coming from dad. He told mom this dog needs acres to roam with a flock of goats or sheep. It is what he was bred for. He also told mom if she took him on and one of us got bit she would divorce him because he would shoot him immediately. I know I sound heartless, but I stand with him on this one.

The chicks were so sad (angry?) when I had to lock them up yesterday to leave for my brothers soccer tournament for the weekend. They were not even slightly amused.
The run isn’t big enough for them so I can’t blame them. Only 54 sq ft for 6 large chickens. They can deal with it for 3 days though.

Sounds promising though. Hopefully the dog can find a better place.
