I hope it's not abandoned. So many are these days
I doubt it.
The German Shepherd looked in good condition and was wearing a jaunty bandana that looked clean.
He was a bit too interested in the chickens for my comfort.
He didn’t obey any commands like sit or stay. But he did respond to come on let’s go!

Sorry no pictures today or yesterday. It's been heavy rain and there's a muggy fog around. Which I find strange. Because this time of year the fog and rain is usually cold. But it's feeling kinda warm

Let's hope he forgets about your chickens. Plus hopefully you can trace it's owner if he comes back

Well if there is nothing saying anything against it then I would just go for it. Why raise a potential reason to change the thing? Then if they do then you may be grand fathered into it and still be able to keep it.

I am such a good influence
Good news! I emailed him and he got back to me saying that roosters are allowed in rural residential zones!

Now to finish up the run, build or buy a larger coop, and then hopefully add a rooster to the flock, maybe next year! Well... Probably a chick that will grow into a rooster.

Does anybody have any recommendations for roosters? Any certain breed(s) that you've found to be the best? Breeds I should stay away from?

Now I'm getting excited 😆

what breeds do you currently have? that would really help to choose which breed would be best (although each bird is obviously an individual). I would also try and get chicks/hatching eggs from a reputable breeder as they are much more likely to end up not being aggressive due to selective breeding from the breeder while hatchery birds tend to be much more luck of the draw.

I know it is not Saturday but I'm going to go ahead and do a kitty update.

The tiny kitten my brother took in is still here in isolation in his bedroom and bathroom. He had it to the vet over it's eye and it had a upper respiratory infection. It's completed its 3 day worming treatment which the poor thing desperately needed and has a few more days of antibiotics. The vet put it at 4 1/2 weeks old so about a week younger then he thought it was. It can eat soft food and eats it well. He is soaking the kitten chow with kitten milk replacer we had on hand as it cannot eat dry food yet. He is putting out feelers at work to try and find it a home when it is around 6 to 7 weeks old and completely healthy. Thankfully it took to a litter box real quick and no accidents after the first day.

The biggest kitten news involves "Trixie Jr" who is 5 months old.

This little girl went to her new home Monday evening. She did not go far. She actually went across the road to the house in front of me. The new neighbor's who have the little girl who is my new honorary niece as I am now "Aunt Becky" to her. They already had 1 7 month old cat who is full of energy and thought she would do well with a friend close to her age. Thankfully they only wanted a girl or else my "Cry Baby" would have had to disappear for a hour or so. Me and mom walked over both girls for them to choose between. Mom has gotten super attached to the other girl "Socks". She did not want to offer her up but was willing to if it meant a good home for her. Talk about almost breaking down in tears when socks was not chosen, yeah that was mom. Honestly Trixie Jr was the best choice for their home. She loves everyone and is super playful. Socks is already set in her personality and she is a 1 person and look at me but not touch cat. She has chosen mom as her "person". With a 3 year old I could see Socks not fitting in and being overwhelmed.

This picture was sent to me late last night.

It is a relief to see this. I was told the first 24 hours was rough as their other cat Stella at first did not like her. They spent most of the time fighting and Stella was really being mean to her. They took her with a understanding that if it did not work out and Stella could not deal with another cat we would take her back. Things seem to be going in the right direction finally. They also told me part of the issue is understandably right now "Vivy" is enamored and focused only on the new kitten. I see promise there though and so do they. They figure in a few more days the cats will be best of friends and all will be well once the newness wears off.

I'm still thankful deep down they were not interested in a boy. Because honestly, the other best option would have been my Cry Baby. He loves everyone, is the most playful of them all and is a talker hence his name.

IMG_4605.jpeg Good morning everyone, bit chilly here today, +2C (35F) and calling for a high of 9C (48F) - snow overnight tonight.

Hope to start getting the Hen Houses ready for winter, right now it’s still mild enough that I don’t want to enclose everything, but I do need to find the coverings for the windows to keep drafts out and have them ready to put up next month. I want to drag that nice will branch up from the paddock for roost for those two OEGB bantams. And I want to plan who goes where, the three Roos still need to be dealt with, and Mr P will need to be kept away rom the younger hens until he is fully feathered out.

And what am I doing? Watch Chicken People 🤔

I have no desire to show my chickens - had enough fun with that when I had my rabbits as a youngster and then my horses. My desire is to sit on my lawn chair with a cuppa tea and watch them peck around in the dirt!

Here are my champions!

If you’re gonna do that, you will need a coffee mug: :D

I have 2 SLW, 2 BSL, and a mystery chicken (probably some type of RSL)

I have a couple breeders in mind to check out when the time comes!

I tied another two hoops on my living gazebo. Crazy as it sounds, I think this is going to work!
I have to get the shoots at just the right moment - when they are long enough to give a nice high arch, but have not yet turned woody (then you can’t bend them, only prune them).
This kind of structure is normally made with willow which remains pliable, but no harm in experimenting with what I have!
I am now out of the sturdy grocery store ties so need to find my basket of wire.

Your hens seem to like the foliage/arbor ❤️.
Our first flock (2011) would sit under the climbing rose bush that was intertwined in the chainlink fence when I bought the property. Later the chainlink got replaced by block wall so the rose is gone now.

We had to remove the rose bush & erected a popup canopy for chicken shade. (2011)

Depends upon what you need AND size of hens. Roosters are larger than the hens of the same breed. If you have 1 small hen and several large hens, the small hen will get squished with a rooster of the same breed as one of the large hens. If you have all large hens, a small rooster is going to struggle a bit to get the job done. If you're in hawk high ways, an alert bird is wise, but if you've got smallish space, an alert bird (also usually means ACTIVE) may not be such a good choice.
