To the best of my ability, recipe under the spoiler

*technically great grandma's, but obviously I grew up with my mom making it for me

This is very much a "throw it together" type recipe. No exact measurements provided, in other words :clap

You need:
A big pot
Water
Milk
Po-ta-toes (boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew)
Yellow onion
Celery
Noodles (large shells [not jumbo] like these are what my mom has always used and they are the best imo)
Egg(s), raw
Salt and pepper

Step 1: Peel and chop your vegetables. Cut your potatoes into equal sized cubes, but not very small, so they cook evenly and relatively slowly (unless you want them mushy). Add them to the pot. Cut your onion and celery, add them to the pot. In all, your vegetables should fill half or a little over half of the pot.

Step 2: Add water to the pot so that all of the vegetables are submerged with water to spare, if that makes sense. You need the extra water for step 3. Put the pot on the stove over a medium heat and cover it. You want to bring it to a low boil, stirring occasionally.

Step 3: Once it's boiling, test the potatoes with a fork. They shouldn't be soft yet, but they shouldn't still be completely hard either. Basically, when you poke one with a fork, it should have some give but still be firm in the middle. Once they are, uncover the pot. Add your noodles, which is why you needed the extra water. Really, how much water you need depends on how many noodles you want in your soup. I like a lot of noodles. Stir them in and bring the pot back to a boil. Cook the noodles until they're how you like them, basically. It's tricky to get the timing right with the noodles and potatoes. You also need to keep the onion and celery in mind. It's so thrilling! :gig

Step 4: Turn the heat off and add your milk. I hope you left enough room in the pot, because you need a lot of milk... The broth should be white. You need to do this pretty quickly!

Step 5: Crack your egg(s) into the pot. QUICKLY stir it! Make especially sure you break the yolks quickly so that they don't scramble, but disperse into the broth as a liquid and thicken it. This will also give the broth a bit of color! :) The egg whites will cook and heres why shell noodles are the best for this recipe: they're like tiny edible soup bowls in the soup, and the bits of egg white get tucked up into the shells along with the broth and bits of veggies and it's sooo yummy... 🤤

Step 6: Let it cool, salt and pepper to taste, and enjoy!

That blur is Magrat. I don't think I've posted this picture yet? I love it 😆
I linked your potato soup recipe to my DH who likes to try new ideas. We use turnips in lieu of potatoes (works just like a white potato) & use no-gluten pasta for noodles. My farm mom used eggs in all soups & stews & salads ~ lots of eggs in potato salad especially. We even put eggs in our chili.

Good morning

I have updates on princess.
Seeing her outside alone and knowing the weather is drawing closer to winter, I made the decision she needed much more. So as I said when her friend Tina died last November, it's best that I rehome her.

Looking for a new home was difficult and I couldn't be sure that they would protect her as I have done for so long.
Thankfully I found a sanctuary, one that is vegan and wouldn't even eat or sell their eggs. They give them their own eggs back 😤

Yesterday was my hardest time, what with my dear old dog dying on Saturday then seeing princess leaving on Tuesday my emotional state was pretty low and I was also in unbearable pain, so much so I had to cancel an important appointment.

But the happiest news for me was seeing princess's pictures and receiving updates since she arrived.
Firstly they said that she was chatting a heck of a lot, to a turkey next to her and the flock she could see outside that inturn came back to talk to her. ❤️

Then even more comforting news last night. Yesterday princess made 3 new friends. Now that really made my heart glow.

Here are the first pictures I've received

From the information I'm receiving Princess is really excited to be there. This is one decision I've made that was right.
You’re doing so well by everyone in your care, Marie! It’s hard to let them go :hugs :hugs
Hi everyone.

I've been MIA since pretty much Friday evening. Rosie finally turned a corner Friday night into Saturday morning and is recovered from covid. This time around it was rough on her and a couple times I questioned if a trip to the ER was going to be necessary over her breathing. I am exhausted and have absolutely zero energy. I have no reason for this as I am not sick. I honestly believe I have set up an infection or abscess in the broken tooth. I am counting down the days until Monday when I can finally get into the dentist. I am making sure I spend some time outside with the chickens. The coop needs cleaning again and new plastic to cover it for winter. I want to get that done this weekend. The way I felt the last few days if it does not change it will not happen. This afternoon I hope to have some new pictures of the chicks, mainly individual ones of the silkies. For the life of me I still cannot tell one way or another if they are boys or girls. I still have not heard 1 attempt of a crow and zero tidbitting. If they are boys they also still have absolutely no interest in any of the girls be it their sisters or older hens either. This includes George. I look at their tails on some of them, maybe it is a boy. That same chick also has a perfectly round head poof with zero hints of streamers. They are 4 months and 1 week old today. You would think I could at least be able to attempt to start guessing one way or another.
Tooth infections can be dangerous, don’t hold off if you get worse or develop a fever, make it an emergency visit if you can (?)
Twister does that to my knees and ankles - ouch! The know how to find the bony parts and give them a good crack!
“Oh, hey, here’s a firm bit. Interesting! I wonder how firm it is? (Whack! Bop…Crack!) Wow, pretty tough (Crack! Crack!) yet soft too….(Whack! Thwack! Crack!) Uh oh, she’s turning around….”
Seriously, I love this thread and I'm glad I found it ❤️ You're all great! Thank you for your kind words :hugs
We feel the same!
I too have a biter (full on attacks sometimes) and have never figured out why. Weirdly when she is broody she totally chills out. Generally she is much more relaxed when she isn't laying.
That’s interesting. Diane is not laying right now, but she’s in heavy molt. Interesting to see what happens if she does go broody!

I love how people have figured ways to start their wood stoves and fire places, back in the day we used newspaper rolled up into logs and kindling built into the log house type structure. Worked well, but no more news papers now!
Political flyers make a great substitute for the newspapers.... and you can rip them to shreds first..

I've had a number of problems with my teeth, two came loose and then I got an abscess. I took antibiotics for the abscess and that created a nasty water infection and my kidneys were seriously painful.

So on making a search too see if I could
help myself I came across studies that had been made since I think the 70's? on a sweetener called Xynitol.

After hearing and reading about this sweetener I decided to give it a go by adding it to a natural tooth paste I've used for a few years now.
I added just under half a teaspoon into 50mil of my toothpaste.

Then after cleaning my teeth i swilled my mouth with himalayan salt and warm water after that I went back to what has been called by many as oil pulling.

Some people use olive oil I chose coconut oil. I intend to try caster oil soon. Both of these oils draw out bacteria. I just used it as you would a mouth wash then spit into a tissue and put it in the bin

My friends were amazed because i found my teeth went back firmly into my gum and after approximately 5 days the abscess had completely gone

As for your broken tooth I don't know where it's broken obviously but my old friend had chipped his front tooth. It was on a slant . Incredibly that tooth grew back . He's not around now so I don't know if he got filed down to even it later. But I swear it grew back

That's a bummer 😕
Have you tried magnesium and zink?
I've only just started using a powder called D-Mannose (an online friend suggested it and it's really helped me) plus I eat a bit of banana about an hour before bed.
I do my teeth after the banana.
But when I'm woken it very difficult to get back to sleep. I'm sorry you are going through all this.

I hope Rosie improves . Again vitamin d's c's and zink...I read these vits are helpful in easing off covid .
Hopefully you'll find more answers on that somewhere soon.

I'm in no way a professional, I'm just trying to survive and sharing what I have done personally.

Good luck with the appointment today :hugs

I hope you try my method. It can't hurt to give it a go and you might save money.
TY Marie2020 ~ these methods all work in helping prevent & sometimes alleviate symptoms. Unfortunately most of us wait till there's a severe problem & expect instant relief. I'm 110% on natural stuff as you know & most of the time don't take meds cuz they make me sicker. For instance rather than prescribed steroid creme I used natural Arnica instead for skin irritations & resorted to a Dr prescribed steroid creme only in one case of severe vasculitis. & in this day & age of delayed so-called social medicine it can take days or weeks to get medical appts so knowing natural relief before a Dr is a relief. Bless you for info you share.

@Marie2020 I'm a bit late to respond, but still wanted to say I think you did wonderful. It's not an easy choice, and the timing made it especially difficult.
How are you feeling now ? It must be strange to adjust to a life without both your little doggie friend, and princess.
I'm sure seeing those lovely pictures of her must be heart warming.
I hope your two cats can still keep your animal mama's soul fulfilled.
:hugs

Argh, so sorry !
I sometimes cringe a bit reading about Marie's natural remedies 😉 but xylitol is certainly more than a fad. It's now added to many toothpaste brands here. I'm not sure it would do anything once the infection is declared though.
For tooth pain, clove essential oil is really efficient though disgusting, and it seems to also have antibacterial properties. If you have clove at home you can just break one in two, rub it on your finger and on the painful spot. That's due to the eugenol content and that's why clove smell and taste makes many people think of going to the dentist 😣.

It's Friday and Léa may still not have grown back her tail feathers, she has fluff !

And a BFTP with butts. April 2022, four of my ex-batt's with my partner.
On the ground from left to right Blanche, Cannelle and Brune and Vanille on JM's shoulder. I miss them and sometimes I also miss those carefree chicken times when I had just six hens and none had died yet.

My mom makes THE BEST poor peoples' potato soup (that's what she calls it 😆) it's always been my favorite and I'm so incredibly HYPED to eat an entire pot of it! .... Okay... Not the whole pot. 3/4 of the pot...

7/8 of it...

I'll try not to eat it all, that's all I can promise :drool
