Mud is a real killer. But some birds just have so much fun in rain & mud they don't have the good sense to seek shelter before it's too late. The Silkies don't have the proper feathers to have rain roll off & they'll get cold rain soaked skin. Many times we've had to paper-towel dry rain-drenched Silkies. Can't blow dry them either ~ too much of a temperature shock.

I blow dry chickens all the time. You just can't use any heat on the blow drier. My chickens love the air blowing over and drying them.

Social medicine is the pits! When I broke my arm this year it took 21 questions about insurance coverage before the ambulance figured which ER hospital to transport me, 1 hour waiting in the ER admissions, a couple cursory checkups & Xrays, wrapped my arm in a flimsy sling & sent me home to see my "primary care physician" who was gone on vacation. Some yelling & I got another staff doctor who finally referred my broken arm to an Orthopedist. All this took NINE days w/a painful broken arm in a makeshift sling!!! Oiyoyoi!!! I switched insurance management during open enrollment but I have no hopes it will be any better.

Pain tax ~ voting reminder again ~ she's my best hen ~ no squawking, no poop, no moulting, & she stays pretty & sweet.

I can’t get over how these two white(ish) ladies shine in the sun. Not multi-colored like the black chickens, but still a special look.

Miserable. But what has it to do with social medicine? We don’t have that in the US.

Social medicine is another word for govt mandated health coverage rules ~ many qualifier names for the same thing. Free Medicaid is state govt-offered health insurance which is the pits & free to non-citizens.

I remember when Wyandottey was a chick and got wet late at night. The heat plate I bought at tractor supply, was defective and shut off. Poor wyandottey was freezing cold and I quickly realized that he was in distress. I took out my blow dryer and warmed him up, making sure that he was completely dry and comfortable. We made a special bond that early morning in the cold and dark room. He loves me for that kindness even today. Chooks, they remember!

Air dry & paper towel dries are good. We just don't blow air on cold rain-soaked Silkies because the draft of any air makes them shiver when they're cold/wet.

We use a small Pro-Baby hair dryer rather than a standard hair dryer. Meanwhile on pleasant baby shampoo necessary tush bath days we will use Pro-Baby on low warm & use our fingers to diffuse the air over the feathers. It's a great little dryer.
