No One Wants to Play Alone

Having a big split in ages in your flock can lead to separation anxiety of a different kind. Aster is not even 20 weeks old and has the energy to explore and wander wide. With her mum busy laying an egg, and the other 3 hens being over 5 years old, there is no one who wants to explore with her.

The old ladies were laying under the trumpet vine relaxing and were not interested is going off scratching with Aster.

Awwww - poor kiddo. It’s tough having all that energy and no one to share adventures with! That’s what happpens here with Georgie in the Summer House, I put Mrs LC in with her but that didn’t work LC is off on her own happily. So I put Betty in there also and Georgie and Betty are hanging together.

It works well because those are the three wee ladies who I don’t want out with the big boys.

I’m glad to see that everyone is doing okay. Pony, your horse and tick are going to frustrate you. I think you need some help holding her while you work on the tick?

Just looking at the yummy's alone let's me know how she is well cared for she is looking so happy

Deansfarm looks like a paradise place to be . I can't wait to visit there.

Deans Farm Trust Sanctuary is special indeed. I found a lot of their videos on youtube, I posted Princess picture on this thread too ~ she's on Instagram, youtube, facebook, & she's pictured in some photos w/ the 2 new hens & the turkey.

These are people w/ real commitment for all livestock in need. The battery hens are the sweetest to see rehabilitated & given a chance to do natural chicken stuff & brought back to health. They even brought the livestock birds inside pens when AI wild bird threat was going on so the hens weren't mingling open range w/wild birds.

That's a good point about age groups. We've always acquired chicks in pairs but if one chick passed it left the new chick alone to fend in an established flock. So back in 2017 when we added new chicks we started acquiring them in triplet so if one passes there will still be 2 left to pal around.

We really don't have ordinance to add 3 new Silkies which brought to one chicken over limit. But our Dana is over 7 yrs & we have no idea how long an older bird will live so getting an extra chick was a speculative decision. Currently we have 3 older birds & 3 new ones & although the ages mingle occasionally they do gravitate to their own age group.

3 older birds in front w/3 new pullets in back eating at a feeder against the block wall. All birds somewhat together yet grouped by age.

Well not sure you can fly cross border but you’re welcome to help

When I bring her in and she’s eating I’ll deal with it, food is a great motivator for her.
