Wow, I had a pleasant surprise this morning. Back in the summer when all the contests were going on I entered photos of my dear Drumstick in this one..

I've always thought he was special and a real good looking boy. I know I am very biased as I loved that rooster with every fiber of my being. This one was to be judged and not chosen randomly. This morning the winners were announced.

Drumstick was first in the standard recognized Large Fowl Rooster and second place overall in the recognized category. Way to go my brave boy. I hope this morning up in heaven you came across a whole mountain of raisins and dried cranberries. I feel honored as all the entries were gorgeous birds.

That's a good point about age groups. We've always acquired chicks in pairs but if one chick passed it left the new chick alone to fend in an established flock. So back in 2017 when we added new chicks we started acquiring them in triplet so if one passes there will still be 2 left to pal around.

We really don't have ordinance to add 3 new Silkies which brought to one chicken over limit. But our Dana is over 7 yrs & we have no idea how long an older bird will live so getting an extra chick was a speculative decision. Currently we have 3 older birds & 3 new ones & although the ages mingle occasionally they do gravitate to their own age group.

3 older birds in front w/3 new pullets in back eating at a feeder against the block wall. All birds somewhat together yet grouped by age.

I’m not gonna tell, if you get an extra one or two chickens!
(By the way, Silkies don’t count as chickens)

Next year I am entering both Bubba and Branch. I wanted to this year but I could not stand to go through and look for the best pictures of them. It hurt to much, I tried with Bubba and just could not do it. I did not even begin to try with Branch. George will also be entered in the non standard category. Next summer he should be stunning.

I swear you need 1 silkie. Actually you need 1 silkie rooster. Within 2 weeks you would come back on here and change your tune. You would once again have a house loving, tv watch partner in crime.

I know that feeling well. It’s hard for me to look back on pictures of Sir Jaffar. The tears start to flow.
And I go through that pity party process again and again.
I remind myself that chooks don’t always last forever, as much as we’d like them to.

Nice picture. Mom and Dad are currently on the hill hoping to see some of their male relatives. Yesterday dad saw a 6 point, let it walk. Mom saw a 6 and a 4 point and let them walk as they were babies. Rule of thumb here is "if their bodies are smaller then the dog they walk." There is so much work involved cleaning them that you want one actually big enough to make it worthwhile. There is some nice bucks around, we have saw them all summer. Of course, they know when gun season opens up and hide.

I saw a black Silkie rooster at the county fair, where I entered BEN (the most beautiful roo ever) BEN won the blue ribbon award for best of show in the competition
