Oh I am sure they find me entertaining running after 40 odd chooks all going every which way. Telling them ‘go to bed, come on now go to bed’.

Then ending up just carrying them in one by one hahaha.

I think that having the chooks has definitely given the horses something to look at and entertain themselves with.

Better than them watching the same Mr. Ed shows over and over !

Tonight I did the usual count and came up with 46. I then became confused (easy to do these days), and couldn’t remember if it was 47 or 46.

No it has to be 47. But still I have 46 count. Came back to the house to grab a bite then back out to do chores, another count - 46. I was about to grab my phone and find the message here with the count. It was then I saw Little Grey up in the window well.

I hauled her butt down and counted against. 47. And a second time - 47. Yay!

I couldn’t remember if Bert was part of that 47 or not. But he isn’t, I will make a note of the count and the date so I know for the future

Regular aspirin? What is the dosage for chooks?

Regular aspirin is 325mg, you need low dose aspirin which is 81mg. That is 1/2 a tablet twice a day.

It would be impossible to break regular aspirin down to a small enough portion to use.

I have forgotten in the past. If I had tonight the outcome could have been terrible.

W/ our slight climate change, longer dry winter nights, the hens sleep longer & their eyes get gluey & then turn crusty. The longer the nights the longer chance for crusty or stuck eyelids. DH checks every chicken each morning to use vitamin E oil to cleanse any crusty or stuck-shut eyes ~ especially on the Silkies when their beard fluff gets caught in the crust.

This is the vitamin E oil we use from Walmart's vitamin aisle ~ also on Amazon. Our vet says it's a good treatment on dry chicken skin too ~ face, legs, toes, beak, comb, toenails.

81mg aspirin is children's aspirin ~ a chicken dose is half a children's 81mg tablet?

Hi FBA! I hope everyone is doing well. I miss you guys a ton.

Chicken math has taken over my whole family and flock… As of right now, I have 24 chickens (I’m giving one away soon, as he bullies the girls.) I might be getting some D’uccle’s from a friend pretty soon. I bought eight more chickens, and they will be here around January 7th! Three Cream Legbars, three Black Copper Marans, and two Easter Eggers! I’m hoping for all pullets, but since two breeds aren’t autosex, I have a feeling I’m going to get a rooster or two.
Life here hasn’t been the greatest lately. It’s just been an awfully hard year, especially for Dad. He needed to retire because of his stroke, so money is going to be short now. His dad passed away just over a week ago. I don’t want to dwell on the sad things though.
My grades are great! The semester is ending on Friday, and I will get all new classes.
For my current classes, I have one 97, a 99, an 89 (which I’m hopefully getting up to a 90 on Monday), and a 90. I’m worried that next semester won’t be as great, since I have math, but I’m going to try very hard to get all A’s!

Since my grades have been pretty good this year, my parents have been a lot more lenient with me. And they have also gotten me a ton of stuff that they never would’ve gotten me. For example:
Yesterday (12/14) we went to a tack shop so that I could get a few things for Auggie. I went there looking for a new bit (because I have no connection with him using the one I had before) and a new girth strap because the other one didn’t fit.
I came out with a lot more than that.
I came out with a brand new western saddle ($250, it was on consignment but the old owner never used it), a new western bridle, and a western saddle pad. Not to mention the latigo and off latigo, western reins, a martingale, a new bit, and two cinches.
I paid $161 of the total cost, which wasn’t great, but it’s how much I had saved up. Apparently Mom and Dad went there knowing that they would get me a saddle if there was one under $300.
I am very happy and I’m super excited to learn a bit of western. I’ll take more pictures of it next time I go to the barn.

Wow PTR! Good going on grades! I always had my head in the books too in high school. How sweet your folks appreciate & rewarded you in spite of the $$$ setback. That saddle is pristene! Prayers for your dad. Declining health is the pits ~ I await broken arm surgery myself in January.

That's a good size flock you're developing. Our hens have been laying all thru these darkening months & we haven't had to buy store eggs all year! Hope that happens for you also w/the breed varieties you're getting. Think hard before mixing little D'uccles w/ full size laying hens ~ littles get mercilessly picked on in an established flock.
