Mr Wyandottey started crowing at 02:30 PST. I had to bring him back to the coop, because he’s just too loud, and he’s no replacement for my beloved Sir Jaffar. I really miss my little fearless feathered buddy 😥
He will settle down in a few months. This time next year he will be a wonderful boy.

I use golf balls in the laying boxes, only draw back is they keep wanting to play thru. It becomes quite a mess! :barnie
I use golf balls too, the ones I find in the horses’ paddocks that my neighbour lobbed over trying to hit the horses and the barn.

What a doorknob! I got enough to give to my BIL he never had to buy golf balls to go golfing and now I use them in the chooks nest boxes 🤨😁

Made sure one day when I was out fixing fencing to mention that to my friend on the phone (so the neighbour could hear), about my BIL reaping the benefits of free golf balls!

Down side is they stopped doing that after they heard me telling that tale!

Jenn, I certainly hope so. He’s beautiful and so far trainable. Thing is, Sir Jaffar was more human than bird.View attachment 4010096
You've kinda been reinforcing my research results + my own experiences + sharing w/ my old chicken neighbor about breed temperaments. That Cochins, Silkies, Blue Breda Fowls, Pekins, White Leghorns (+ most bantam breeds) were real sweeties, good people-friendly birds in general. In the gentle giants the Brahmas & Java have been generally categorized. From personal experience I would conclude that true Ameraucanas (not EEs) have all been gentle breeds though more skittish. Never had EEs but owners have reported overall sweet but not necessarily the cuddle-bugs like Silkies or Cochins.

As for Wyandottes my dialogue w/ owners over the years has been a mixed bag. I was so enamored by Wyandotte beauty in both the silver & gold varieties but reading on breed characteristics they were classified assertive so I never chanced getting one.

As for larger breeds like Barnevelders or Bielefielders owners say they are gentle birds but I never wanted larger breeds cuz of having smaller gentle Silkies in the flock.

For laying hens my thumbs are up for White Leghorns & Barred Rocks for good temperaments.

My overall midsize breed of course is Dominique ~ not super layers but great conversationalists smart friendly birds & not prone to aggressiveness.

There's always the exception to the rule + how much time or patience someone puts in making a bird a pet ~ some birds just turn out naturally good pets.

Hmmmm interesting

Have to say from my experience with all the chooks here, is that no one breed has one character. What I have found is that individuals vary with temperament and behaviour.

Then understanding how to deal with the different temperaments is how to handle all of them.

Same with horses, dogs, cats, kids, people……

Some are sensible and calm….

And then there are those that just plain bat crap wack-a-doodle nut bars!

Marty drives me bonkers - but as she has got older she has settled down.

My horse Truly is real treat - I go between wanting to beat her with a stick. To laughing at her clever antics.

It has been my experience that the more intelligent an individual is the more bat crap crazy they are.

😉

Say a prayer for Shenron please. He's 10 and it's been a struggle to feed him. Now he's very sick and barely responsive. I'm afraid it might be his time and I don't think I can manage losing another pet this year. 20241219_122210.jpg

I'm so sorry 😞 :hugs:hugs
There seems to be so many of us losing our pets. Try and be positive.

Is there a thread here in BYC that could advise you?

Get well Shenron 🙏 😘

As far as illnesses go I got off pretty easy. Fever for 30 hours or so. Slept pretty much all day Tuesday. Woke up yesterday with a normal temp so went to work, didn't get really tired until the last hour. Still feeling a bit run down and sniffly, but overall mostly normal. I only work 3 days a week so off until monday. Next 2 weeks are both 2 day weeks because of holidays, so an easy finish to the year. 🙂

We have some sunshine today so hopefully I can get some new chicken pics.
