No snow… what’s your temps like? Been miserably cold here. No wonder Georgie won’t stop being broody! It’s warmer to snuggle in her nest box hahaha I left her this morning with a couple eggs under her I didn’t have time to grab them before I left, at least they won’t freeze ha!

I had to separate Mr P from the main gang - that Betty and a couple other of the pullets were picking at him again and got him all bleeding. He looks like heck again. Sheesh!
It's been odd. Lows ranging from low 20sF to 32F, with highs in 40s-50sF with icy winds dying at night. I threw a fresh bale of pine shavings down last night as the stragglers were going to roost....you'd swear the floor instantly became hot lava with the stragglers refusing to touch it. The rest of the pullets look like they're joining in moulting, too. It's been an odd season.

I brought him in the house last night because the roo next door sets him off at midnight and two o’clock . Your Roos start crowning because of your beautiful presence in their world! Just saying
It’s dark and they are locked away, must be my cursing the snow they enjoy hearing 🤭

I hated putting Mr Wyandottey back in the coop but he doesn’t seem to have limitations. Sir Jaffar knew his place, and surprisingly did exactly as I asked . Until the day he died :hit:hit:hit:hit:hit:hit:hit:hit:hit:hit:hit I miss him so much. I would give my whole fortune to have Sir Jaffar back, he meant that much to me
I am sure Sir Jaffar was a handful when he was a youngster also. You need to have patients - your youngsters will grow up and be good roos too.

Strange the young ones moulting. Just my older ones moulting.

I'm so sorry for Mr P. Sounds like feather picking has been an established habit w/the hens that won't stop? Are the hens picking anyone else? Maybe bald chickens are happening from the feather pickers? That's got to be so frustrating? Feather pickers don't stop. Even if Mr P is fully feathered they'll know they can come back to do it again. If the known pickers can be isolated before they teach feather picking to more hens?

So many things we go thru as owners & all our situations are either so different or so similar!

Our Silkie Violet taught others to feather pick each other's faces for better vision & the habit has gone generation to generation w/our Silkies ~ never stopped. In our situation we didn't stop the face picking cuz it saved us from having to use dangerous scissors to trim around Silkie eyes. A groomed Silkie moved away from a feather picker when they felt groomed enough.

Our Violet who started the Silkie face feather picking tradition. She would stick her face into another hen's beak to get them started to groom her!

The Silkie pullets let their faces get groomed too much at first 2022 ~ Suzu

Suzu ~ 2024 still likes a good trim but less of it

Ginny allows a feather picking trim but only directly around her eyes
