Tis the season for everyone getting ill - everyone at work is sick, they are all hacking all over the place, now I have one of those ‘pre flu’ headaches you get, hoping it’s just a migraine.

Alex I sure hope and pray you are feeling better. And hope your weather this year is good, no rain this season hopefully.

We need more rain, but not more flooding.
I’m slowly healing.
I just wish Coco wouldn’t purr so loudly in my ear, I’m trying to watch a movie.

New year, new life in the run. Nacho from next door came over with her brood to enjoy the better life with us. She is training her chicks to come over and help themselves to my chick feed.
Strangely enough a few look a lot like Rudy when he was a chick!
I won’t collect them up and brood them myself. I MUST let nature take its course.
Cute little buggers!

Update: Nacho and her brood stayed in my run at lock up time. They are in the old box, where the Rockettes grew up. They must like my digs better than next door.
It’s crazy, lose a rooster and gain six more birds!

As usual the B-2 Stealth Bomber fly-over opening from the annual Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade flew over our cottage since we're in its flight pattern. Sonic boom as usual early 8 a.m. wakeup for us!

I apologise for not having done it sooner : thank you all for the good thoughts about Piou-piou.
I'm not coping very well, it's been a difficult end of year. I still want to wish everyone at FBA the best possible outcome for 2025. I'm thankful for this thread that remains a place where we can share chicken knowledge, shenanigans, joy, and sorrows.

No, and yes. Again please forgive me, I'll just quote the relevant stuff from what I wrote on different posts on my thread. I don't feel up to writing it more concisely again.

Yes, we were too sad to hear about Piou-piou. She was a fighter ~ so unfortunate once birds go into torpor sleep they aren't alert to night predators .

Your money will be well spent on your sturdier safety materials. 11 yrs ago we spent over $2,5OO on a coop/run very secure w/ dog kennel panels ~ much more than we thought we needed for only 5 hens/no roos ~ paid off protecting the hens year after year from unexpected nighttime skulkers. It would even take a bear quite a while to tear our coop apart. We aren't far from the mtns so bear, deer, & coyote have been reported in the area. Some residents found bears swimming in their backyard pools!

& 11 yrs ago we spent over $20,000 on tearing down old flimsy chainlink property fencing to build a tall block wall w/added privacy fencing above the wall around our front & back yards. Not only do these materials protect our hens from stray dogs but it keeps the homeless people or wild animals from tearing open easy chainlink to get into the property. Still, even w/ all the perimeter block wall & iron bar gates around our property we've had nighttime feral cats, coyote, raccoons, & possums jump into our yard from neighboring rooftops. So glad we had the overly sturdy dog kennel wired coop/run well secured & closed after dark inside our yard. We also forked over $$$ for a patio roof over the coop & a 2nd patio roof at the rear of the house for the hens to keep dry from our stormy windy rain seasons.

DH invested in a powerful toy water gun to squirt nighttime predators or daytime hawks w/ cayenne peppered water. The predators don't like licking their chili peppered fur clean & don't come back for the irritating spray.

We all have different security needs from different kinds of predators. & certainly whatever you can afford for quality security materials for your flock protection will be well worth it for years to come!

Every autumn/winter the flu/colds hit us. Why that time of year? Never seem to hear these during the warmer months?! Can it be the Thanksgiving family parties, Christmas crowded shopping, & New Years' gatherings give way to faster population contact w/sick people?
