Well now let’s see - Muffy - she is a Mr P baby, and who knows who her mama is, but it’s one of my Grey Ladies Whiskers or Misty as she lays blue eggs 😊

These were taken Aug to Nov 2023 when she was just several months old

Darn hens keep picking at his head he’ll never get there it seems…
I'll take BOTH of them! Gosh Mr P is the handsomest

I had to remind myself multiple times today that I asked for the cold weather.

During last nights Ice storm the gutter over the horses stalls fell. Russ's stall partially flooded.

It is not safe to get up on the roof right now to reattach the gutter so instead a ditch was dug to prevent more flooding. His stall was gutted and he is happy as a clam with another freshly bedded stall.

It was only 25 today and scattered snow and what fell last night is a mix between slush and 4 inches of ice depending where you stepped.

Yes, I asked for this. I may have been a idiot.

Nice photos. Are the black hens w/ dark eyes a Marans or hybrid layer. Those eyes are so pretty ❣️

TY for the roo pics! Is Mr Buff roo a gentleman too? The golden Buffs have a dreamy shine. Ijak is always good looking w/ the coveted Dom U-shape to his stance. Secretly, he's my roo!
They are Black Australorps. I love those dark eyes too, one even has gold with black flecks in her eyes.

Stormfeather is a gentleman too. He broke out of the hormonal idiot stage months ago. The roos both take care of hens that go back and forth between them. I love them both!

Yup silly girl! Careful what you ask for.

Never got above -11C here today, but the sun was out. The chooks are not happy, poor things were taking turns under the sweeter heaters. It’s about -2C in the barn so not terribly cold but still they were grumpy.

The Hen House will be warmer around 3C maybe 4C so that will be a bit warmer for them.

Mr & Mrs LC are suffering the most, wish Georgie wasn’t broody, she is taking up the crate that I had planned on putting those two on when it turned cold.

Meanwhile Georgie is getting fed up being in the crate, but it is way too cold for her to be running around with wee ones in the Summer House. Maybe I will save up and get another Sweeter Heater, make a separate run for her and the kids and hang the heater in there.

Did I mention I really hate winter? I got my finger tips frost nipped and had a hard time using the mouse to scroll today, ouch! Sore finger tips!

Sweet baby, she probably spent a while cleaning up.
I had to clean it up for her. She didn't even notice that it ended up on the wall. She would rather have gluten free biscuits. I think that chicken has learned some discipline.
Once in a blue moon I'll give our birds a taste of organic strawberry or blueberry jam w/ no artificial "natural" chemical flavors or extra ingredients other than sugar & pectin. Yes, animals have a sweet tooth so no more than a taste.

Same w/ice cream ~ only a taste.

Interesting ice cream flavor you got there. Birthday cake?
I though for a moment she was out in snow! Poor Grandma 😊♥️

So what eggsactly where you making?
Nothing. I only bought it because there isn't a lot of sugar in it. However, we'll see if I can make some cupcakes (preferably chocolate) or if I'll just end up eating the whole container instead.
However, you can give me ALL the mint choccy chip icing!
All yours!
Priceless :lau
I just wanted to add a few housekeeping items (do you call them that) or just things I wanted to add in general. First of all, this whipped icing I had has low calories and low sugar. For 2 tablespoons, it's 5 grams of sugar, including 5 grams of added sugar along with 50 calories. So, it's not terrible. It's the flavor that Grandma isn't too hyped up about. There were other flavors, so I'll try birthday cake flavor next time.

Latest on Bird Flu

First Human Death

We have our first human death. The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) today announced that a patient previously hospitalized with a severe H5N1 avian flu infection has died. He was 65 with comorbidities.

There is also a teen from British Columbia who is recovering from a lengthy ICU stay caused by H5N1.

The new strain coming south with migrating birds seems to be more virulent.

More Identified in MI
In Michigan, the virus was found at two more turkey farms in Ottawa County.

Cats Continue to Contract It
APHIS today added about 30 more H5N1 detections in mammals, mostly in cat species. Some of the newly reported detections involved wild cats, including a bobcat from Colorado's Larimer County and a mountain lion near Carson City, Nevada.

Gosh I had thought it was late in the season to worry about this.

I had hear the youngster in BC was off O2 and recovering - they have no idea how she contracted the virus. She had no contact with poultry or farms. Lives in town. No dead birds or pets.

It’s very worrying that wild cats are catching this, but not surprising - they are hunting and eating the weak dying birds that have AI.

We really need an effective vaccine for both wild water fowl, and domestic birds.

Worrying tax

s
The ice cream flavor you asked about was vanilla w/ candy cane bits. I let the Silkie have only one peck from it. She liked the organic fruit jams better. It's a once in a blue moon taste I give them ~ I prefer giving whole produce & fruits rather than processed or sugar foods.

What these Silkies of ours like is plain Greek yogurt.
