Recently it's gotten below 0⁰F with windchill. It got down to -10⁰F not more than a week ago.

She is so gorgeous!! When the sun caught the edges of her hackle feathers I swear it took my breath away for a second!
That's cold enough for Frostbite. The winds will do it. That's how Glynda got it last year and why I locked them in the coop during out last arctic spell.

Yeah, I feel bad but it doesn't look too bad... I hope. I can't keep them in their coop on really bad days because it's too small and moisture would definitely become a problem. I think winterizing the run has worked well enough...and that it probably happened on one of the cold days that I let them out for a bit.

Mugs Monday

Aster has chosen freedom today. The others have chosen the coop and warmth.

Looks like she’s checking out the snow situation for the others - they likely told her she had to go and report on it as she was the youngest 😊

Well not that I want any more chooks - I don’t trust me! I now have those two silkies to deal with when they start crowing…. But I checked out the prices of Freys Hatchery chicks and POL pullets. Not to terribly horrid but they want a minimum of 10 ordered or they charge a fee.

Maybe on a few yrs I’ll get a couple more Azur.

As belated tax for the predator prints again:

Everyone crowded around. Lots of excitement and fussing.

Excuse me...

Sybil forced her way to the front. Laying coach? 😆 It was kind of sweet how mostly Sybil and Magrat were fussing over the whole thing, but at the same time there were some points where I was like "give her some space, dang!" LOL

But after some serious laboring it finally popped! She got a lot of encouragement and praise from me 🥰

"And I helped!"

Sweet Sybil 🤣

Magrat was there for Sybil when she laid her first egg too, bless her little heart. Checking the nest boxes and pacing and making worried noises.

I'm sure she's about to start laying too. Oh, and Aliss squatted for me yesterday! I don't think I mentioned that in my post about letting them outside! My dad tried to get a few of them to squat for him and they wouldn't :yesss: Makes me feel extra special LOL

So, here it is, Esme's first egg!

Moisture is a way bigger problem/ threat than losing the tops of her comb. She may not even lose them. Glynda's healed back up last year.

IMG_5058.jpeg IMG_5058.jpeg IMG_5042.jpeg Vaseline is an awesome barrier layer when you want moisture in the skin! I use it for my psoriasis to seal in the lotion/salve layer. I also put a layer on my lips at bedtime because I won't lick it off in my sleep haha.

In Shadrachs thread he talks about using it to smother scaly leg mites, which makes sense.
You have psoriasis? I hope you don’t suffer too much! I’ve never heard of a human having scaly leg mites either. But I trust Shadrachs
Intelligent opinion.
I have a skin condition also. It comes and goes. Very painful rashes and bumps. Embarrassed to say the least. Around the first few weeks of summer. Doctor says that it’s shingles, but it doesn’t explain the symptoms and the timing. I have a good dermatologist.
