I know Silkies don’t do well in very cold weather. Do they do better than other chickens when it is hot?
Nope no better then my others - when it’s hot and humid everyone suffers, same with extreme cold.

Fluffy does ok with the cold, but not Curly - though Betty seems ok with the cold - and she had bald wing tops from over breeding from Bert. I have kept a very close eye on her incase I needed to house her in the feedroom, but she’s a trooper!

Also I think like us some are more tolerant of cold or heat. And prefer one over the other.

And what about my friends hen with the big poof - what is her cross? I think a Henny x Mr P

That middle one is a different hen, I wonder what their cross is?!

I would like to try Mr P and the Azur. They would be splash for sure and blue eggs and big poofs!
These Polkie mixes remind me of Sultans which are about the same size w/feathered feet too.

In past yrs we've had standard hens panting in the shade while the Silkies went busily foraging around the yard in heatwaves. We've lost a couple standard hens to heatstroke but never one Silkie.

We don't have snow but our little buggers will wade out in sprinkly rain looking for floating worms & insects. Then they'll come under the patio shelter to preen the water out of their fluff. They'll stay out of heavy rains. If its windy we paper towel them real dry to speed up the drying process. No blow drying as heated drying is too much of a temp shock on very cold chicken skin.

Over the yrs Silkies have impressed us w/ their resilience in heatwaves as well as rainstorms or cool weather. We don't have snow but I imagine Silkies need the same precautions from freezing snow as any other chicken breed.

My philosophy is when/if your heart's desire shows up grab it when you see it cuz it might be gone next time.
How profound your words are at the moment, a person here in Ontario that I correspond with (canadianwind) has offered to sell me her Brahma pullets (along with the cockerel which would be a no no for me).

I was not planning on acquiring any further birds as I am way way over limit. It is a thing I am giving some thought to: cost of buying them, having to quarantine them (where?), now way way way over limit, the cockerel is a huge dealbreaker - I will not take on another cockerel. My huge fear of the dumplings being Roos stresses me to no end!
