For my Vet. Assistant course I had to pick an animals disease and do a report on it - I chose AI. There was a study done in India a couple of years ago that found in high temps (I don't remember the degrees Celcius, but it was around 110 degrees F). At that temp, AI dies within 48 hours. They tested it at 4 different temps (in both wet and dry poop samples). at the lowest temp (4 degrees C, so around 39-40 degrees F), it lived and was viable (infectious) up through 8 weeks in both wet and dry samples. There is anecdotal evidence it can survive indefinitely at freezing temps ( no studies I found on this, though). So, this seems to be why it is so prevelant in colder temps. Sun and heat kills it. They also believe that waterbirds (ducks, geese, terns, gulls, etc) act as reservoirs for the disease year to year. Seems like it will not get better until the heat comes back.😟😟😟

Please all, keep your chooks safe. Unfortunately, with the huge pines (hence, no way to put a full roof/netting/etc), I can't keep wild birds out, and I am petrified.
We attended a friend's memorial service today & someone learned we had chickens asking about the AI threat & why they were paying the same price at a local egg farm for half the eggs they used to buy. People are unhappy about egg prices asking why AI is rampant as if I have the solution :idunno

I told them so far as I know wild waterfowl or wild birds are being blamed & that we haven't even put out Hummingbird feeders for the last 3 years.

Latest on Bird Flu

Bird flu continues to ravage layer flocks. You can always find

the latest at this website.

You will find things like the following chart...

I also have a spreadsheet of every reported case of bird flu identified in wild birds since they started tracking. If anyone wants to know what's been happening in their state with wild birds, let me know.
As someone shared, the colder climates seem to show more cases as I saw our Calif areas were all cooler regions where commercial industrial areas were reported. We're cooking our eggs well before eating just in case.

If I knew at 19 what I know now I plus have got chickens long ago! I feel very guilty I didn’t get any hens when my grandma was alive. She wanted some but I didn’t want the added work.

Bad Kelly 😞

This was Ruth with her frog

Lucy, one of my original girls, caught a frog. Because she was an ex-battery, she'd had her beak trimmed so the end wasn't pointy. She couldn't rip bits off it, so it died from blunt force trauma. Then she lost interest in it and walked off! I buried it under a frangipani I was planting at the time.

TY for catching me up! What sweeties! How amazing they stayed in the yard w/o trying to fly or escape. They look very content.

Friends, we are packed up and waiting and watching. It has not rained for a few hours thankfully. Next round of storms is supposed to hit in about a hour. Even if it does not rain one more drop we are in trouble, the backwater is rising. We cannot get out of the holler, have not been able to all afternoon. Our plan is if we have to go, we go up on the hill to where the cabin is and will be staying in the cars. Dad will saddle Dirt and pony Russ up there as well. My chickens, all I can do for them is to box up the silkies and bring them with me, the others that can fly they will have to fend for themselves. They have the hillside they can go to for saftey in the trees. I have no choice. Our whole subdivision is about to be underwater and all our neighbors are joining us on the hill. The barn and concession stand at the ring....Water is level with the concession porch and ready to break into the barn. I'm praying for the best, but we are all ready to run. If we run, I will not be able to get on probably for several days.
