The paragraph about a bug going through Vietnam and Laos....including the bit about 2 blades if fresh grass. If that really has that big an effect on the bug mentioned, is it likely to have a similar effect on bird flu? @BY Bob does your background help decipher that? Is that bug related to AI?

Oh odd! She doesn't have any other white egg chickens on her list, maybe they are mixed with something, that was also a possibility.

The polish can also be white....as a mix then brown leghorn is possible. Neither will be marked that way, though. The lighter one may get the black/salmon roo/hen breast, but I'd speculate will be much darker than standard brown leghorn. And if are polish mix, are unlikely to show the crest at hatch. The golden laced x something else could easily pop the dark colors.

The reference appears to be to a previous avian influenza outbreak - so same bug but different strain.
Personally skeptical about the grass.
Don’t we know loads of cases of free range chickens eating grass who died?

Still....an interesting idea....that likely needs more exploring....and grass is dormant during the winter....when AI is more virulent..... so...could fresh grass help?

Beddybye time update
Hubby was really worried about the two chickies so we quickly got them out and into the brooder. Yeti has taken them under her wing. They are the same size as slowpoke!!! But eating, drinking, and using the heater.

1 unzipping and I believe 4 more pipped. My next pain medicine dose is at 10:30, I will check on them then.

Regardless of mix or breed, these little chicks are adorable. I just figured large white egg=leghorn mama.
I hear more have hatched, however I don't want to turn the lights on just yet. Maybe when I take my next pain pill dose in an hour.
My larger popup brooder arrives Monday.

Where did this trait come from? So which breeds are the parents? Both questions are interesting games...and make for unique birds...when the ladies start laying can throw a twist into things also.

Thank you! We'll see more as they age. I didn't buy those eggs to get all purebreds, the hope was for some cochins or cochin mixes, which I'm sure a couple of the light brown eggs are.
On the other side, now the purebreds are hatching! A marans just popped out, and it looks like most of the eggs have pipped overnight.
I opened the brooder to change the water, and Squatch jumped out and ran to the incubator. She wants those babies haha!
Husband says her name should be Sassysquatch since she's such a personality.

The one with the gold head came from a brown egg. Hopefully golden laced cochin!!!

Sorry for the dim light, I don't want to accidentally wake my daughter.


The two chicks from white eggs have fluffed up to be black with white bellies. Their combs look to be pink.
