That sounds like a plan. Anybody else w/ a cold? Is it possible to isolate Clyde to get some rest away from his pecky hens?

He gets upset if I separate him, some I can separate some I can’t. As of last night no one else is ill - I am keeping an eye on everyone.

My farm Mom always told me to expect chick losses. She raised poultry & as disappointing as it is it will happen to lose chicks ~ she said cuz they are so fragile. It's why it's good to have several chicks to compensate for chance loss. So sorry about the little chickie. Was your little girl understanding about what happened

Yes, she is unfortunately very familiar with death. We said goodbye to the chick as a family.
They will be a week old today, I know they are much less fragile after the first week. While we have enough birds to take losses, I'd rather avoid it!

Nellie is a brown leghorn. White eggs, screams for an hour when someone is occupying her desired nest box and can't be thrown out. Throws everyone else entirely out of the coop so she can lay an egg.....total drama queen.

Wyandottes and orpingtons come in white too. Rocks and wyandottes have yellow legs, orps white...

unfortunately, I can't do pics at the moment - which is why I haven't been posting pics lately. The computer I use no longer recognizes my camera when I plug it in. And I still haven't gotten the other room cleaned out so I can set up the desk-top that I bought - it is still sitting in it's box . and I am just barely keeping my head above water with everything-so that isn't at the top of my list. Cleaning out the brooder and mudroom is, though, as I have chicks arriving in a couple of weeks! Heritage BR (5 pullets, 5 unsexed, & 2 cockerels - max of 5 on each of the first 2 could be ordered) and 3 Welsummers to hit the 15 min. order.

I am super excited that you stated Nellie is a leghorn - because the one thing I was questioning about mine was her tail - it isn't held upright & fanned like the other two - she holds it pretty much like Nellie is in your picture.

The tail gets fanned....and then it doesn't....then....drama, drama, drama. She should be an actress!

One of the new chicks is very vocal. She is cheeping away loudly every time she is awake. The other two are very quiet and content. So I'll have to think of a good name for her. I'm thinking about Roseanne Roseannadanna because she has a lot to say about nothing.

I worried about her cries early on, but the temp is right in their bin with warm and cool spots offered, plenty of food and water. I think she is just singing her songs. Hmmm....if she is a rooster, then maybe Bob Dylan?

But they are DNA sexed to be 99% possibility of female, they say.

Rain again today. But all the birds are doing fine. Even with lots of rain, the coop seemed dry this morning. I had to go out and check on them. (And give my rooster a big hug)

My Sybil was like that. Chirpy chirpy chirpy all day long. Even when everything was fine. My uncle said the reason he brought her home was because my cousins saw her standing by herself in a bin full of chicks peeping her little head off and they felt bad for her.

I think she was just kind of dumb at first, and for the first couple days I had to herd her toward the other 4 chicks any time they moved away because she would just stand there and cry instead of going with them

But once she got over that, she was still a peeper. I don't know if she was complaining or if she just had a lot to say to anyone who would listen. She has majorly quieted down now.

The breeder I got my satins from says that the loudest complaining chicks are always girls. I have a Karen and a Chatty Cathy for sure, and one of the satins was hollering for a while too. I think Cadet maybe.
