Status update: the tiniest of the tribe are fast asleep under mama.
The Rockettes are fed, happy and sleeping in the coop. The six in the middle are mixed in with the Rocks. It’s been a very long day and I am exhausted.
My chicken sitter is in love with my tribe, especially the little ones.

First impressions of Silkies from a Bantam newbie:

These chicks are so tiny, I’m pretty sure a good sneeze could launch them into next week!

They’re sharp, though. Showed them food, water, and the heat plate with a couple finger taps, and they strutted off like they’d just aced Chicken 101.

Friendly? Curious? Oh yeah. They don’t just not run from us; they come right over and say hello giant human. It’s cute as heck, but also, predator awareness seems set to “low priority.” They’re three days old, still sporting the egg tooth, so maybe the survival instincts just haven’t arrived quite yet?

@featherhead007, I’m starting to think you’re onto something—Silkies might not be chickens, they’re just feathered extroverts. But the silkie fans are right too: these fuzzballs do seem to be basically friendship in bird form.

Phyllis spent much of her 5 years as the only polish in my flock. My alpha hen Aurora greatly disliked her but aside from that she wasn't really bothered. When she passed she wasn't even the bottom of the pecking order here. I think she did excellent.

This is very encouraging. I hope that Polly is indeed a female and that she can chill in the mid-low range for some happy years with us Good news for her is that our bossy Delaware-turned-Leghorn is most likely a roo and will be finding a new home in the next couple months and he's the one with a problem. We shall see how it all shakes out!

Maude is the sweetest! I get mobbed when I go to hang out with the chicks these days. I am really looking forward to outside hangs when the fencing and run is done (hopefully this weekend!!! Cmon Washington weather!)

Hoping better weather days for you soon. Meanwhile that's a great way to relax & enjoy the birds wanting to sit on you. Get ready for some to fly to your shoulder or head too
