.....

Nelly is so precocious and is my pick for top hen when the Delaware-turned-leghorn exists the scene!
A Colorado snow country couple asked us what 2 breeds would be good for them & we suggested Dominiques & Buckeyes. They got 2 Buckeye hens & 4 Doms (w/one Dom as a roo) & they loved them.

I always wanted to try Buckeyes but here in Calif there aren't any in our feed stores & more $$$ than I cared to spend on shipped hatchery chicks. Keep me posted on Maude & Nelly's progress 💕💕

Baby time! I'm sorry there haven't been many photos, I've been extremely busy, much more so than normal, and haven't been able to spend as much time with them as I've wanted. The names are still being decided. We have so far: Mary Peck and Dandy (Buff Orp) Stephenie, Elizabeak, Candace (EE) Debbie (Barnevelder) Jerry (Chocolate Orpington) and Bonnie, (BLR Wyandotte) The rest we're still deciding on. I like to see how personalities develop before finalizing names. We knew Jerry would be Jerry before he arrived, but everyone else was named once they arrived. Some are named after friends, some after previously beloved beloved chickens, others were just names we liked. I'm considering naming a couple after book characters, but we shall see. Anywho, here's the group! Yes, they're growing out of that brooder fast! They are moving in a couple days to a bigger space. Can't work on the coop at the moment, weather keeps getting in the way. But this next upgrade should be good for a bit, it'll be much bigger.View attachment 4090847
Wow! They grow so fast don’t they? It’s so much fun watching them grow up ♥️

If I didn’t have to worry about Roos I would love to pop some of these ladies eggs (crossed with Mr P of course) in an incubator.

And Topsy with her fancy topknot and Mr P would have a really fancy chickie!

That Twister was go go go today, hard to get a photo of her!

Yes, I have prepared myself and the kids for this. One or both could well be Roos. I will have the SFH’s not just the silkies so there will be more girls for sure but still I will almost certainly have some tough decisions to make on which Roo(s) to keep in the future.

I could comfortably and responsibly house about 20-25 regular sized chickens here, so getting more silkies can and may be in our future. I do agree, just one of any breed isn’t ideal.

I love this photo, it captures that lovely feeling when you walk out to your chickens and they all rush to greet you.
Sometimes they come on into the garage.....they know the feed bins are in there

Well gosh I hope not! It is on par with the other chicks that we got it with, same day, same hatchery shipment from Wilco - they are our oldest batch (next ones we got 3 days later, and the next 4 days after that for a total 7 day age span). It's not monstrous compared to those birds. Also, it likes to run around, isn't pigging out all day like a Cornish X would. It is a scratcher and frankly looks pretty healthy and spunky, albeit a bit of a boss. I would be SERIOUSLY pissed if they sold me a Cornish x and not a layer!!!
Glad for the clarification. Any chance of group ish pics?
