Well I am counting 5 you have to keep:You enabler you, oh don't tempt me. I could very easily keep every single one of them for myself.
I'm sticking with 4 to 5, 6 at most. In the end I'm hoping for 2 or 3 girls to keep. I know there is no way I will get as lucky as last year and have all of them be pullets.
Oh no. How sad. I'm very sorry. Even though it is normal to lose some right after hatching, it does not make it easier.I'm heartbroken to report I have lost the smallest of the 2 partridge chicks. I know to expect to loose a chick or two the first few days but this was sudden.
Great catch. I hope you got there in time. Having never hatched myself I can only imagine the stress that comes with it.I am so thankful I went back and checked to see if the "fully" zipped chick was out. When I shone the light on it one of the others knocked the egg over and I instantly knew there was a problem. Do not ask me how with humidity at 62% but the little one was shrink wrapped and only halfway zipped.
I immediately pulled the egg and the chick was peeping, but faintly. I dipped my fingers in the cup of water I had beside the incubator to keep the humidity up and started trying to soften the membrane. It was like glue and very stubborn. With some effort I removed the membrane and finished hatching out the chick. He/she is alive but very tired. I almost caught that one too late. I'm hoping all it needs is a few hours rest in the incubator to recover. When I put it back I removed the egg shells and checked the rest of the eggs. No pips but when I picked each one up to quickly check I hear peeping from each egg.
Now the hatch has went from smooth going to stressful and I need to very closely monitor the remaining eggs.
I endorse this list as a minimum.Well I am counting 5 you have to keep:
- One Blue Partridge
- One mystery pale chick
- Two true blue chicks
- One shrink-wrapped (it had a hard start in life, it needs to stay)
Look at their little faces.View attachment 4118934
We are 4/4 on the cheeky poofs! The other two blues should also have them.
Two browns are pipped but we are heading outside for a few hours so I will let them have some peace and quiet. Once the heat plate is warm enough in the heated coop I will let the girlies outside.
Chick Update
I started this at around 10 AM, so my apologies for the delay. It has been quite a busy and hectic day. As requested by @Ponypoor, I decided that you all deserve a chick update. I mean, why not. I won't gatekeep how the chicks are doing.
I will say my health hasn't gotten much better. Every morning, I wake up feeling nauseous (I haven't thrown up) and lately, I've had a slight headache. It doesn't bother me too much but I can't tell if it's a headache or lightheadedness. I just drank turmeric mixed with water. Huge mistake. I can't just keep taking Tums and Tylenol. My education is important, so staying at home is not an option. And yes, I have been sleeping well.
So continuing with the little chicks, here they are now. I still can't decide what their names should be. For the Andalusian, I have either Charcoal, Raven or Footsie and for the Americana, I have Blondie or Shakira.

I do have videos of them, which I might have tomorrow, if I have the chance.
Moving on to the older chickens, look at these two troublemakers, thinking they can just go on the sidewalk, make a mess and get away with it. Have you learned nothing?

I didn't really talk much about the little chicks since not much seemed to happen, but I'll discuss more tomorrow. Have a good night everyone.
