My Clyde loooves his 2 sweeties - Silver and Patches (and they only have eyes for him). He tries breeding them but I am thinking he misses the mark just as well don’t need any more chooks! It’s hilarious to see him trying to breed them. And even more hilarious to see Mr LC breeding Jaffarra

We have some coop drama lately. Goldie bird has taken up grabbing the girls by the head and dragging them. I told him if he doesn't knock it off he's going in the slow cooker. He has a week to learn some manners. I understand neck grabbing is part of mating but he is doing it whenever the girls try to go in the coop, eat or drink, or even walk by him. Just dragging them away from whatever they were trying to do.

Goldie Bird needs to be in with your great polish roo, Marble, - he will teach him some manners! Maybe just Goldie bird and one or two of the other troublesome boys - Marble and Buffy will teach them! And there wouldn't be other pullets for him to attack....Don't know if that is a possibility or not..... just a couple young, hormonal boys in with the adult pair???

Yup I am planning on putting that over top the fences in part, I am sure they will figure out they can fly in there at some point.

I am waiting to see who tries to fly up onto my hanging flowers!

Your wanna-be Leghorns make it to the top coop door to roost so, yeah, they can fly over a lower fence just fine! Flowers? No challenge! If we didn't bird net the garden beds chickens, wild birds, & caterpillar moths would decimate our seedlings

A little bit ago, Gytha bit Sybil, TWICE! Well that was just unacceptable! Sybil put her back in her place by grabbing her by the neck, jumping up and kicking her away while pulling her neck feathers. After that they joined the rest and went scratching around harmoniously.

I wonder if Gytha is pre-broody? She's been ornery and restless, and usually she doesn't challenge Sybil or Aliss, but goes after Esme and Magrat.

Pecking order dramas w/ a bit of hormonal broodiness. Hard to watch but they get it settled.

I will ask her if she is taking anymore clients/patients. She’s been retired since 2020. She lives in Irvine, gratuitously close to the Orange County airport.
Ps. Peeps, never burn your bridges, you’ll never know when you’re going to need them. She’s a good lady. Loves animals and she’s also an artist and sculptor.

Oh, don't disturb her then. If she's retired she needs her time-off. We've had our vet for 20 yrs even before we had chickens. We just line up backups in case of emergencies when he's out-of-town. He takes in the mtn rangers injured wildlife too like owls, fawns, songbirds, coyotes, reptiles, etc. It's not unusual seeing hampsters, rabbits, turtles in the waiting room. He grew up w/chickens as a boy & loves it when we come in w/our Silkies. People really go GaGa over seeing Silkies!

Years ago I bought my daughter a horse and boarded it at a ranch in Norco CA. I still haven’t heard from her for a long time.

We raise kids for a season & then give them back to the Creator to deal with. Some will keep in touch while others not so much. We just never know. It's in His hands to deal w/them as adults.

We got Ginny, Amber, & Suzu from Amber Waves Silkies in Norco but they don't respond any more so my guess is they retired after 40 yrs of raising Silkies & other livestock.

We found another Silkie breeder (plus many other breeds including chocolate & olive eggers & D'uccles bantams) at Buckaboo Farm in OC (Santa Ana). We got our last 3 Silkies from Buckaboo.

Norco has been horse country for a long time but subdivisions are fast encroaching. I just pray their animal hospital stays around to service those who still want to farm livesock & poultry in Riverside County.

Hmm, when introducing a young cockerel to a new flock, it's best that he has older hens to put him in his place. I've read that older = years, not months. So, say I manage to convince my dad to agree to a roo, sometime within the next few months. My girls will be a year old at the beginning of July. How young of a cockerel would be best to introduce to them if I went that route? Young chick? A couple months old?

I know the real answer is there is no one size fits all option, but approximately?

I would say the younger, the better. His hormones will start flowing and the ladies need the confidence to thump the idiot out of them. Its easier to do when he's still smaller/more insecure in his own right. Most hens don't develop the confidence until sometime during their 2nd year. Exceptions exist...in both age directions...
