We’ll see 😊 if things work out as I am hoping it will be difficult to add more chooks to the flock. At least for now. There will always be opportunities for gorgeous chooks - patience grasshopper!

My garden at the barn is on the west side and gets very hot and sunny, I learnt long ago that petunias and geraniums were about the best flowers to plant there, impatiens would die it was too sunny and hot.

Tomatoes, beans, peas, lettuce - love it also. I have a Brussel sprout and cauliflower planted so I will see how that goes. Never grew those before.

Over the years I have planted other stuff but I don’t like to have the manage things, the tomatoes beans peas and lettuce are very low maintenance.
Low maintenance ~ the only way to go since farm animals by themselves are already a lot of maintenance❗

Let us know how the cauliflower does. I was thinking of broccoli in addition to cukes & tomatoes for the chickens ~ but last week I chopped up some broccoli for them & they looked at it like an alien from space so I nixxed planting that veggie. Brussel sprouts sound yummy. I think our girls might go for those.

Meanwhile our friend helped DH trim our so-called nursery-labeled DWARF(?!) Grapefruit tree!

After - still not done but the green trash bin was overfull w/the pruned branches!

The only consolation of having a dwarf tree that isn't really a dwarf is it has juicy red fruit & the chickens often snooze under it & they wander out from under it sometimes when we look for them.

Sooooo - I came ‘this close’ to getting 4 Black Mottled d’Uccles pullets - I couldn’t resist! But, alas, I missed out on them someone had already purchased them. Just as well, right now is not a great time for me to get any more pets.

But my neighbour up the road has a bunch of silver laced polish chicks - I think coming a month old. Maybe I’ll get a couple of those - see if she can hold them at her place for a bit. Till they are grown, it’s just a thought but we will see. Things are a bit Topsy-turvy at the moment, don’t need to be over extending myself!!!

But oh I would love a couple of these lovelies!

Even her crest is silver laced!
My experience has been get it when you see it cuz it will not be there when you return... just sayin'...

That's it. Just the two of us and @SimpleJenn , right?

Anyone else have Polish that I'm forgetting? Speak up. More Polish talk!

Featherhead has a BYC avatar pic of a Polish?

Btw ~ Nimue has been my favorite from the start as a chick💕 Can't explain how some chicks grab me from the start... Poppet, Georgie, Periwinkle, Nimue, & so-o-o many more unnamed just on this one thread❣️

Red grapefruit- so jealous! I bet you can cut it to 4’ and keep it at that height. I have seen them (and orange and lemon) cut in a ‘square’ shape in the tree groves where they farm them in Arizona. I was told it’s so the harvest machinery can access them.

Can you prune yours like that I wonder?

I might try to grow a mango in a planter pot, keep it pruned to about 5’ see if I can have it fruit.

The chooks have never had mango, but I bet they would love it! Any bruised peaches I give to the chooks. Mum has some grapes I will try them with tomorrow.

All On Their Own

No help from Dad tonight.

I actually am really surprised. I've never had any chicks figure it out this quickly on their own.

Hopefully it continues all week. If so, they will get yard privileges.
That’s awesome! Wish my silkies dumplings would figure out getting up on the roost shelf. Even Georgie and Clyde figured that out themselves!

Yep I know, but the timing is really not good. It would be unfair to add to the dynamics of the flock right now. I want everything stable and calm. No drama!

I think it's the headpoof that does it. Extra heat dissipation to run a more powerful Actual Intelligence model in their heads without overheating.

All animals have Actual Intelligence.
