Do you find your Dom's more conversationalists than other breeds? Our Dom's since chicks were unusually chatty. Our Silkies are also an interactive chatty bunch.

We'd talk to our Leghorns & they would look intently & attentively but didn't converse back. Our Breda's & Ameraucanas were not conversationalists either .

My Dominique will come inside as well but she is usually only vocal about food.

My Welsummer likes to make lots of noise and will tell me off/express her feelings.

That darn Goldie kept nipping my leg when I was trying to do a head count tonight, she wanted all the attention and I was ignoring her. Now I have 3 great welts on my thigh! She actually hopped up and nipped me! And then had the audacity of whining grumbling and cursing me because I wouldn’t pick her up and give her some attention!

I finally yelled back at her - she glared right back at me - cheeky little brat! She is so used to my snuggling her and carrying her around, my fault for treating her like a baby. But she is just so darn adorable

Gentle is a soft-peck girl.

This girl needs a name now. She has slightly longer and floppy spikes on her comb. And there's one more black hen who isn't out right now.

Their beaks are two tones just like their Pom poms. They really couldn’t be cuter if they tried.

It is miserably hot out. I spotted both Momma's hanging out in the shade with their chicks near the creek bank. I sat out on the back step for a few minutes sweltering so as not to disturb them and get some new pictures.

First up is Goose and her boy. I suspected so at hatch and I cannot deny it now. I've actually known for a few days as he is not even 2 1/2

weeks old yet and look what he is sporting on that pretty little head of his.

Next up is Gryffyn's 2. Right now they are behaving and not sporting any hints of a comb. Georgette has also revealed who her mother is as I did not get to see what egg she hatched out of. I just was told by mom a light tan or cream colored egg. Her feathers are coming in a soft yellow. My lone Buff hen Siri is his/her momma. It makes perfect sense now. Clean legs, white hatch down and when it does sprout, a single straight comb. Georgina, spots, more spots are popping as she looses her hatch down. The newest little black spots are in her tail feathers. Little one, do not let me down, you have the potential to be the most adorable spotted bowling ball as a adult.

Hubby is worried that Breezy has heart problems, the breed tends toward them because they gain fat easily (hence the marbled meat)

Caught him again, gave him more cool water and tried to give him an ice pack but he wiggled free and ran off.

Just like By Bob's Hattie, this is just me again since I'm sensitive about chickens & heatstroke, I would keep Breezy like Hattie in-house. Heavy birds, older birds, laying birds, are heatstroke targets. If that's impossible, then lots of tarp or shade w/slow running water in the run to stand in. Our Leghorns liked to stand in the drinking bowl so we got the idea to start using slow running pooled water. Or a shallow pan w/ room for bird to stand in water & a frozen gallon or quart bottle in the pan to keep it cool. A mess? Muddy chickens! You bet! But I like it better than a heatstroke.

Our slow sprinkler running in shade on 100F days. Muddy? Messy? Yes but it saves them...

Rue -
Almost all symptoms except her leg and gait issues have disappeared. Unfortunately her leg and gait have gotten worse. Her left leg has some visible swelling now. She is now inside in the tent, the heat was adding a layer she didn’t need.

I have spent the day trying to devise some form of a hammock for her that both alleviates the weight and is safe. I have failed though. She isn’t weak enough to accept this and she fights like a banshee. Anything that encircles her legs isn’t safe as she will push out of it come hell or high water. Anything that doesn’t she will not stay in.
My middle ground, I am heading to tractor supply tomorrow to double the finely shredded wood chips, hopefully this will provide more cushion.
She remains alert, curious, and is still eating, drinking, and pooping. One heck of a fighter.

Hattie Update

I turned Hattie so she could watch TV and a friend joined to keep her company.

I kept her in until nearly 7 pm and then I moved her back out. She is now comfortably resting in the Cluckle Hut with the Phyllistines
