Loving someone or any creature you have to let go. If they are not fully contented.
It hurts yes, but knowing they are happy and safe is the best option
You have a big heart, and a lovely personality. I find in life, that is something very refreshing. Never change from who you are. :hugs

Well actually I have done that a couple of times.
Once when I was live-trapping mice in the house and once with a neighbor's dog who kept coming round to visit because the neighbor kept forgetting to turn on her fence.
I got blue spray paint designed for marking cattle so it was safe, but I noticed that she started to remember the fence after her white dog returned with a blue stripe along his back.

Tax: Piglet feeling much better today now it is cool. Tail up again.

Hello @Ikslo

Are you new here - welcome - I love your avatar photo - I have a fondness for zebra chickens

Breezy had either a heart attack or heat stroke. I got to him right as he started thrashing. :(
I'm so sorry! I was just wondering about him a little bit ago. That's just terrible. This heat has been really awful. Glad a cold front is pushing thru. I'm only just now getting over my heat sickness.

Fly high, sweet Breezy. Lots of hugs and love for you and your family, Jenn. :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs

I have had many babies integrated with the main flock, I usually let them start roaming with the main gang at about 2 or 3 weeks old, when I am working in the barn to keep any eye on them.

The key is lots of places to hide and get away; I make sure they are ok and if anyone gets too rough I intervene.

By the time they are around 5 weeks old they are mixing and mingling fine. My main gang are so used to chicks beimg around though, they just mostly ignore them. Surprisingly when the babies go to eat, the older ladies allow it!

Mr P pretty much just ignores them, but the chicks like to run and hop up on him which freaks him out. He can’t see with his topknot I imagine 😉

Wow that Gryffyn - she’s a handful, but I am glad she’s ok. They are as stressful as the horses I think!

I thought I saw a bit of a crest those last photos ♥️♥️♥️

Are crests somehow a dominant trait I wonder?
Both can give their owners a heart attack that is for sure. Dirt put me through the wringer for 3 days after Russ left. He did NOT take it well. He hollered, went off his feed and drank considerably less water. He also paced his stall and pawed the gate which he now has a loose front shoe. All of this mind you at the start of our heat wave. Dang it Dirt, you were a walking colic case waiting to happen and had me checking on you hourly.

It was totally understandable though and we thought it may happen. Dirt has never been by himself before. He is good now, I just had 3 sleepless nights.

Gryffyn saw this and said hold my beer I can top that. I will say though today she kept herself and her chicks away from the creek bank. They spent the entire day in Russ's old stall which has turned into a chicken paradise. Well, momma and baby paradise as Goose and her son love it as well.

I wonder about the crests trait. So far George's son shows no sign of a crest. I'm thinking with the black coloring and feathered legs he is either Squirrels son or Spooky's. I'm leaning towards Squirrels as he is showing a lot of Maran's traits and Squirrel is half Marans. Her eggs are also not nearly as dark as they used to be so it is entirely possible that the lighter tan egg was hers.

When I took those last photo's of the chicks I thought maybe, just maybe the start of a crest on one of them. I also thought nope, optical illusion with chick down. Last night getting a good look up close and personal and 2 days later it confirmed it was not a illusion and both will have a crest.
