Fascinating.
@featherhead007 Keep in mind whether they are full-blooded game birds or not though too. Isn’t some of that game bird feed 28% protein? That’s pretty high. Although maybe with your steaks and all they have already been getting more protein?

Buckeyes are a “heritage” bird and the Livestock Conservancy recommends 20-22% protein I think. I don’t have them on that yet because I can’t find a medicated starter feed with that much protein. I hesitate to dilute the amprolium with a game bird starter, not having found a game bird starter that’s medicated. What I have is 18% though.

I have some sad news, sorry to be a downer. Rue took a turn for the worse, by yesterday she was no longer trying to eat or drink. She also seemed to be in quite a bit of pain when she did even small moves. I made the decision to put her down last night. It was very hard as she was so very young but I couldn’t let her be in pain like that.

Oh, that’s rough, I’m so sorry! The well-being of each bird is important and you made a decision in her best interests….I would be suspicious that sudden increased pain was from the cause in the first place, & indicated something worse going on than maybe thought, not something she could heal / recover from. :hugs

Now, what’s up? What’s all this squawking about anyways?!

It’s too hot to be carrying on in such a manner!

It’s dropped to 28C (82f) but the humidex is still high 34C (92F). I brought them all into the rooster run so I could keep an eye on them.
Complaint to management it seems!

Yes, I have done more reading about Mareks and injuries that cause similar symptoms while trying to figure out how to best help her. There are many things that are similar in terms of observable behavior.

I checked her out afterwards and no visible injury still, just the leg swelling on one side and the bruising I saw before. No tumors were able to be felt anywhere on her body.

My best hypothesis is it was a spinal, hip or upper leg injury. Probably hip, causing swelling to her spinal nerves due to a flight gone wrong and/or a fall. I believe infection set in from the break. This explains why she was okay for while and even improving and then went down fast.

Any news on the chick front?
It didn't make it either. She came off the nest this morning, so I don't think the rest are pipping yet. The shell got peeled back like she was trying to help it, but it just didn't get through the membrane...which didn't seem to wrap it either, but I'm not real sure how a shrink wrapped chick looks either. I definitely seeing things I've never seen before, so learning experience for me too.

Sorry to hear this. I have not seen that in a chick either, thankfully.
